Romney lost MA, and he lost Ryan's WI. Romney lost the state of his birth as well.

(9,612 posts)Sargent Shriver was born in Maryland but residing in DC when McGovern and he won those three electoral votes in 1972.
Before that, it would be 1956 when the Stevenson/Kefauver ticket lost both Illinois and Tennessee.

(9,612 posts)Wilson/Marshall lost both New Jersey and Indiana in 1916, yet went on to win re-election without them.
All in all, it's happened 19 times throughout history, not counting the two Washington elections where there was no real opposition.
