One year ago tonight

I was living in Chicago, going to Columbia College. Making films, loving life. I lived at the Buckingham student residence, just across Michigan Ave. from Grant Park. I was working on an assignment, a draft of a feature length screenplay, a dystopia about corporations taking over the country and the resistance movement to unseat them. I put my last period in place around 10:30pm, and came over here to DU. I had been avoiding the streets, avoiding the news media. Nervous as hell. When I read on DU that the election had been called and McCain was giving his concession speech, I rushed down to Grant Park. I'd been hearing the noises all night, I knew there were thousands of people just across the street praying and hoping for an Obama victory. When you guys declared that Obama had been named the victor, I rushed downstairs, across Michigan Ave. and took my place along with the other elated democrats, watched President-elect Obama give his victory speech on a screen the campaign had set up, surrounded by people just as optimistic as myself, feeling infinite. What a night that was! I wish I could have been there tonight!

One year ago, I finished my first feature-length screenplay, saw the election of someone who will go down as history as one of our greatest presidents, and joined DU. Thank you all for being a part of that spectacular night! Congratulations to two-term President Barack Obama, and congratulations to all of my liberal brothers and sisters! Four more years... and then we fight once again!

I'm off to bed, and thank God this ordeal is finally over, the overwhelming weight of the possibility of a tax-dodging, job-exporting, 1%er taking the United States! Let's never allow them to take back this country! Let's continue our progress! Let's bring to fruition all of the promises of the New Deal that is responsible for the existence of so many of us here! Good night, America! I'm glad you made the right choice!
