I have been seeing that Texas might go blue...
I believe it now--especially in this climate.

(1,040 posts)Lived in Dallas for 20 years - never thought I would see them go blue, but they sure did, by a large margin. Unbelievable.

(5,668 posts)were going off in Austin on the news obama won.
as for which of 3 states Willard actually considered home. MI no, Mass .. no way. Utah. very. Now if only we can fix these election laws. but first lets fix the election lines.. they tried to kill the voting process this time and enough of that. This isn't Iran

(36,827 posts)Probably the only reason it was red in 2000 and 2004 was because Shrub claimed to be from Texas.

(44,580 posts)Investing time and money in making red states bluer -- even if it means the James Carville type don't get their fat consulting fees.

(33,958 posts)Maybe with these kinds of numbers, the DNC will pay us a little bit of attention.

(6,667 posts)Population growth among minorities and the proof that voting makes a difference will have a huge ripple effect. IMHO

(28,885 posts)How do we beat the redistricting? It's set up to put the same type Reeps in place who set up the gerrymandering in the first place? To change it, we have to elect more Dems. It feels like a catch-22.
That's why we lost the national House too... gerrymandered red states. It hurts.
former9thward
(32,097 posts)Obama's share of the vote went down from 2008 and gerrymandering did not have anything to do with that. I don't live in TX so I don't know why it occurred.

(44,974 posts)It actually appears to be turning redder.

(50,254 posts)The Republiban have had a majority there for years now. It'd be nice if we at least got that whittled down a bit tonight.

(33,958 posts)the redistricting saw to that.

(28,885 posts)We kept the Reeps from getting another super majority. Dem Wendy Davis beat tea party candidate Mark Shelton. See:

(18,705 posts)The polling location today had a steady flow of traffic.
I say we are purple right now, blue is coming.
We can send good people to congress, that will help.

(33,958 posts)We had a record number of registered voters this election.
Our county had a 65% turnout of registered voters.

(18,705 posts)We should be proud as Texans after this.
Our state is not a deep red anymore.
Purple going to blue.

(5,213 posts)Republican margins since 1976 (the last time Texas went blue):
1980 14%
1984 27%
1988 13%
1992 3%
1996 5%
2000 21%
2004 22%
2008 12%
2012 16%
I don't see a blue trend there

(44,974 posts)I am not sure why people want to insist that it is, but if you look at the numbers, clearly its not.

(4,096 posts)but 2020? It could happen.

(4,096 posts)I guess I'm just too conservative (heh) on this, but maybe it could happen sooner than that.
It is very possible that I am overly optimistic. It is frustrating to constantly hear that Texas is too red and it cannot be done when with an all hands on deck attitude we might just make a difference. How many people do you know who don't vote because "it won't change anything"? What if all those people voted? What if we get hispanics and whatever other blocs aren't voting currently to the polls? What if the state party and DNC and whatever other dem orgs make sure there is a dem in EVERY race? You know?

I think Joe Barton would have lost.
There is no public transportation in his district.

(33,958 posts)One of the key things in our Demographics is the Hispanic explosion.
We NEED a Hispanic Governor to best represent the demographics of this state.
He is a perfect choice.
txdemsftw
(461 posts)we can do this...we have a lot of bright, educated people here that ARE voting blue. We just need more hands on deck and more support!
I honestly believe TX will be a nice shade of purple-blue by 2020.

(23,278 posts)we are going to start absentee voting.Screw this noise. I will pay for the stamps here.

(32,097 posts)So 41% is a move in the R direction. I don't see that state moving much in many years.
Horse with no Name
(33,958 posts)we had record turnouts.
former9thward
(32,097 posts)That is just math. On edit: Texas 2008 McCain 4479328 Obama 3528633
2012 Romney 4555799 Obama 3294440
So Rs were up almost 100,000 and Ds were down 250,000.

(10,170 posts)and no candidate can afford a statewide recount in a state this large. This is why the repubs are so hard to unseat. They count the votes here. They can be padding them R as well.
