If repubs take House & Senate. Impeach Biden. Would they refuse a new VP in their hate?
They dream of impeaching both Biden & Kamala and installing Speaker MTG (really McCarthy) but it does not work that way.
But it's not true that the speaker of the House or any other predetermined individual automatically becomes vice president. Upon becoming president, the former vice president would choose another individual to become his or her vice president.
"Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress," Section 2 of the amendment explains.

(18,770 posts)As I recall from a couple years back, conviction wasn't the point.
Impeachment was the worst thing that could happen to a President short of being removed from office. The impeachment would be a part of history and an asterisk might be put next to your name in books.
Even worse would be multiple impeachment. Can you imagine the shame of a President with three, or more, asterisks?
*do I really needs to add it here?*

(18,770 posts)A Democratic controlled Congress will use impeachment as a political weapon just the same as republicans?
Is that something we really should just accept?

mention either or all of the Afghanistan pullout, which Trump engineered; the border situation, which has been screwed-up for decades; or inflation, which is a private-sector thing. In essence theyre impeaching him for being a Democrat. I figure if they accidentally do get the House majority theyll impeach him over Hunters laptop.
And if one impeachment fails theyll file more. I suspect hell be impeached twenty times, and Trump - lets face it, they dont have anyone else - will run on a do you really want to keep a president whos been impeached twenty times? platform.

Impeachment effectively no longer exists as anything more than an empty admonishment.

(21,966 posts)Even if they gin up some impeachment BS, they'd still need two-thirds of the Senate to vote for to remove Biden, which won't happen.
jimfields33
(15,948 posts)Only a majority in the house is needed? That makes it too easy to just impeach for any reason. Didnt tie shoe right, impeach. I think they will impeach three times just because. Id rather they change the rules to 60 percent of the house at least.

(68,667 posts)an OP where a 538 scenario gives the House and the Senate to the GOP. It may happen or it may not, but I am not worried to give up on the election and I truly don't give a damn if they impeach Biden. It is meaningless when they can't convict.

(52,166 posts)since they won't have 67 Senators. That said, they would never accept a new VP. One of the reasons Nixon picked Ford when Agnew resigned is that Ford was House Minority leader and very popular with both sides of the aisle. He feared his choice could be rejected.

(4,734 posts)Just to be able to say he is/was the most impeached President ever but he will not be convicted in the Senate, at least for anything he has done so far and I think it HIGHLY unlikely that he would actually commit an offense that justifies removal from office.

(2,273 posts)There is no way the republithugs can get a conviction in the Senate, so they wont be able to remove anyone.

(24,437 posts)They don't need an actual reasonable justification, just a pretext to tee up a vote and do some grandstanding even if it dies a quick death in the Senate. I've heard that they want to go after Mayorkas on the Border, so their zeal to impeach is not limited to just Biden. The article I read made it sound like McCarthy is not necessarily on board with impeachment and just wants to "Benghazi" Biden before the 2024 Election but may not have any choice if the "base" makes enough noise- assuming they win the House, of course.

It would be nothing but an empty effort in an attempt to claim they impeached him, and they would be left looking petty for having done it.

(1,766 posts)Harris would get to choose who she wants as VP, and then that the House and Senate will have to vote to approve that person.
The only way Pelosi would become POTUS is if Biden and Harris died at or around the same time.
But then, they don't know any Amendment except the 2nd, so no surprise they think this is how it works.
fescuerescue
(4,448 posts)But they won't be able to convict.
I suspect that that every new President will be impeached for many years to come when the House is of the opposite party.
That die is pretty well set.
