(28,946 posts)For this Blink And You'll Miss It burg, NH, a long line. Dems were already out with signs, no Repugs.
Now, I'll do up a pot of soup for the SU, then to the local OFA office and do the last phone bank. Call confirmed Dems
1. Did you vote?
2. Will you vote?
3. Do you know where to vote?

(10,559 posts)We were there first thing - 7:05 am - and were voters #69 and #70. We left around 8:10 am.
We talked with the children about how the voting place was like "church for democracy" (which is why they had to behave while we waited in line). They were dressed in "fancy" clothes. They were in strollers at the last Presidential election.

(4,475 posts)I vote in a very urban, 60% African-American precinct. When I arrived at 7:30 am, there was already a 15 minute line. It was about twice that long when I left at 7:50 or so. I've been voting in this precinct for about 6 years and this was definitely the biggest early am turnout I've seen so far. People were upbeat and polite and there were no complaints about the wait.
There were a couple of people standing outside the voting area. One was shilling for a Democratic state representative, and the other appeared to be perhaps some kind of poll watcher but she was wearing a Steelworkers Union official vest and was friendly and polite. There did not appear to be anybody there attempting to discourage minority voters or anything like that.
On Edit: Oh, also! I just found out this morning that a good friend who is a moderate conservative (not the crazy kind, which is why we are still friends) is NOT voting for Romney this year. It's probably the first time ever in her life that she has not voted (R) for President. She didn't say who she *was* voting for, and I didn't press her, but she said she wasn't voting for Romney. She's in rural New York state. I suspect there are more like her out there.

(32,095 posts)It took 45 minutes, and a lot of that was due to a number of write-in races. I was expecting the line to be twice as long, although it was starting to get a bit longer as I was leaving. In this deep red district in a deep red state, there doesn't seem to be much enthusiasm for Slick Willard, apparently. I had fun during the actual voting process, too. Whenever I filled in a circle, I punctuated my actions with some sound FX. I didn't give away who I was voting for but muttered stuff like, "Take THAT!" and, "Skee-doosh!" and of course, "Yahtzee!" Had a bunch of folks around me chuckling.
All in all, it went smoothly, plenty of machines, GREAT turnout, and I was in and out in 20 minutes.

There were long lines in a blue precinct!
As far as I could tell, there were no "Black Panthers", no UN storm troopers, and also no "True the Vote" people. Just some kids selling cookies and coffee for the school band.
It was exactly how voting in the US should be. A neighborhood affair with people chatting while waiting patiently in line at the local middle school, with band kids selling breakfast to raise funds.
The only thing I'd change are the paperless voting machines.

(14 posts)My oldest son and I walked through the neighborhood together this morning to the polling place, where we actually had to stand in line. We're some small blue dots in the red state of Oklahoma. I couldn't figure out the delay, until I realized that they only had one registration book. In the past, there have always been at least two. So it was taking a while to get people signed in. (I was going to start crying 'voter suppression', but since OK open carry now, I didn't want to get shot! LOL)
So I got to witness my son voting for the very first time. Brought a little tear to my eye. He did vote for President Obama, so apparently his father and I have done something right!

(59,505 posts)We live in a VERY Republican town and county. The polling place was heavier than I have ever seen it, but there was no line at our district. The people we saw who we knew were all Democrats - a couple and their adult son and another neighbor, but this is all self selection on our part. I hope the turn out is high elsewhere.
(One possibility for the parking lot being so busy AND the lack of a line is that some people were voting the truncated ballot - essentially provisional ballot as they are displaced from shore areas hard hit from the storm. Additionally many hung out after voting to chat with neighbors on who lost power and who didn't.

Line wasn't too long at 7am. Still had my ballot half completed while waiting for a voting booth.
In 2008 when the lines were so huge, as soon as I got my ballot I stepped out of line, plopped down on the floor, and began filling in my ballot. People asked if that were allowable and were told they don't have to use a privacy booth if they don't want. That line started moving as fast as the election officials could process people!

(2,379 posts)Saw that the republican candidate for CT State rep. in my district was running unopposed and saw that a candidate on the Working Families Party line for that race was blacked out with a stamp. I asked why and the poll worker told me the candidate died recently and the SOS instructed them to cross out the name on the ballot. I wasn't sure if still voting for that candidate might cause a problem with my ballot so I didn't vote for anyone in that race (there were no other candidates and I refuse to vote for a republican).
As soon as I got home, I called WFP office and they confirmed that, sadly, this information was true.
Anyhow, I voted in a very small, red-leaning town in Litchfield County, Connecticut at around 11 AM and the line was out the door.

I think there will be a record set today. It seems that no matter what party, people were voting like their lives depended on it. Many senior citizens that hadn't voted in quite some time were voting today, as they needed instructions on how to use the electronic booths that have been in use for quite a few years.

(4,288 posts)The ballot in Kentucky was only one page. There was some bullshit amendment to guarantee hunting is never banned. I voted no. The polling place was very busy just before lunch. I only had to wait about 5 minutes though. Kentucky has both paper scanned ballots and one machine if you choose to use it. The machine uses a stupid wheel to move between choices instead of a mouse or touch screen. I tried it once and hated it. I use the paper ballot only now.

Sis was incredulous, and told him she was hugely for Obama, and gave a quick run down why, while on dumping on Romney by saying he was amazingly dishonest. Dude listened and thanked her, and then checked in. No idea who he voted for, but I think we discovered one of those baffling undecideds in action. Yikes.

very long lines at my polling place compared to usual. since we usually have high repub turnout and not so great dem turnout, higher overall turnout is probably good for dems.

Except my district only had four people in front of me and my nearly nonagenarian neighbor. Another neighbor, securely Democratic neighbor, was running our precinct table which is why our precinct goes smoothly.
They were out of pens. I donated a couple.
FOUR long pages, two sheets, two full sides each. I already picked all my choices and it still took a long time to fill the ballot.
Then a nice lunch with tea and pumpkin pie.

(90,840 posts)Polling place the usual: Christ Lutheran Church hall, right in our neighborhood. Plenty of volunteers, plenty of booths, lots of paper ballots and a box to put them in.
For pete's sake, how hard is that to put together?
A volunteer sitting at the door asked my name (no ID required) and checked it off the roll. Another volunteer directed me to the person with the book for me to sign next to my name and address. Another handed me my ballot and a Sharpie pen. I went to one of the abundant booths, took out my sample ballot, and marked off every name and proposition, took it back, dumped it in the box, got my I Voted! sticker and a smile and left.
The ballots will be counted by Scantron, and if there's any dispute, they can be resubmitted and/or hand-counted. There is a paper trail.
I could go on, but really, the point is that if you WANT votes to matter it doesn't take expensive hackable electronic machinery -- or much machinery at all. All it takes is the old-fashioned determination to get people in there and give them the simplest possible tools.... and apparently a bunch of laws with teeth in them so that these things are provided rather than withheld.

(153 posts)but living in a small city has some advantages. Our polling location houses three precincts, but our ballots are so simple that I merely have to color the ovals in next to each selection.
Voted all Dems and I live in a red area - you can tell when you get to the county board offices and realize you can vote for "seven" and there is only one Dem in the race (all of the others were Republicans).
People were both nice and helpful at the polling location - in fact, I was looking through my wallet for my voter ID cuz I couldn't remember what precinct number I was in. . .one lady at a precinct table just said "come over here and we'll check in ours, and if you aren't in this one, we'll send you over to the next one." At the second table, a man asked for my address and smiled and said "oh, you are with us. Here - just fill this address form out and we'll get you all set up." No muss, no fuss. . .they checked my sig and my address in the records and handed me a ballot.

(18,186 posts)and had a swell time, only took 20 minutes, only two stations but the election ladies were really nice and efficient as always.
We wrote in a senate candidate and that was fun. We have voting machines so it took a while to spin the wheel and then hit "enter" a dozen times to do the writein.
Saw the neighbor and chatted a bit, line was about a half dozen people long at the slowest.
Got our little square code tickets and our stickers and they got two more Tennessee votes for President Obama!

(12 posts)I just got home from my polling place. It is an honor to, for the second time, shade in the Obama/Biden bubble. I have been a weepy sap since watching the coverage of last night's final campaign rally. I somehow kept it together while at the polls.
Everything was smooth as could be. The poll workers were all friendly, helpful, and truly seemed dedicated to making sure every person was able to cast their ballot.
Although this is absolutely wonderful, I could not help but being upset by one thing. ALL voters should have a voting experience like mine-- Show up, sign in, fill in ballot, cast ballot, receive confirmation that your vote has been counted. It should be this way EVERYWHERE.
May anyone attempting to buy, steal, cheat, suppress, sabotage and violate our right to a democracy only have it backfire tenfold.

(14,177 posts)It was a pretty good day. Went to school. Picked up something easy for dinner. And then I went to vote. It was a very long line for this polling place. A bit longer than in 08, but much bigger than in 2010 by at least 2x. There were more than 40 people voting. 25 at the booths and around 15 in line when I got there another 5 or so came in after me. When I left there was about 20 people in line waiting for a voting booth. Every one seemed happy. I bet they were voting for Obama.

(7,887 posts)SO, even though some lady "observer" said she reported it, I called anyway... the DNC line to see if we could get the machine fixed or replaced. Then I had to go to work.
Called again at lunch to see if any progress, they took my report again. "Don't you think it's weird that a precinct with the HIGHEST percentage of eligible voters who actually vote in the state of MN has a broken ballot scanner?" "Yes I do," said the DEM taking my report AGAIN.
Talked to my sister who voted at 2:30pm and STILL had to stuff her ballot in the bottom of the machine. Talked to my husband who at 6pm was using a WORKING scanner for his ballot... then I had to wonder... will all the ballots from earlier be counted? How will I know?
So I called again with the idea that I could at least verify that those ballots had been counted.
I was told I could, but I had to wait for the polls to close at 8pm and then I had the right to watch the votes be counted. So I did. I staked out a place with permission and watched between 7:40pm ish and 11:40pm ish I watched as over 1,500 ballots were fed into a working ballot scanner. So I got to see the final vote tape.
1,800+ votes for Obama out of 2,162 votes cast. OUR precinct had 2,240 registered voters at 7am and 516 ADDITIONAL same day registrations. (1 of which was my DIL who moved in to our house with their family when my Son and she lost their home.)
To put this in perspective... There were 3 precincts in our building. One judge after closing up his side came over to our precinct...... He had 500 registred voters at 7am and added 100 voters today. There were 500+ votes cast on his side.
MAYBE they still would have got their ballot scanner repaired in time to get our ballots scanned
and included in tonight's totals and maybe not.
Before I showed up there were only 600+ ballots that had actually been scanned. Now I'm sure they still would have been scanned and counted, but as a citizen watcher, I had the privilage of making sure.
MAYBE next race I'll volunteer as an election Judge.

(577 posts)In and out in 5 minutes. I made sure to thank everyone working as I left.
One young man in particular had to be just 18 said he just did it "because." Don't know what he was expecting, but he said it was pretty cool seeing how seriously people took this exercise
the fact that people were expressly thanking the poll workers impressed him. Maybe he might have been expecting the kind of indifference that is so pervasive in the culture these days.
Whatever it was that got to him, he said he will do it again.

I have issues with some of Obama's decisions ... but I was proud to vote for him in 2008 and did so again without hesitation. Later, I will bitch and moan about the NDAA, the handling of the DeChristopher case, the tepid support of environmental issues, etc. Later. Next month or so.
Right now, I am just relieved that the country has retained the services of a rational, competent and decent person. Right now, I am quite content with that.

(5 posts)A brutal 14-hour day of mostly doing nothing. No thugs appeared, no fake cops to scare off people, real cops simply to vote, no disruptions just outside the 100-foot limit. DOJ team appeared twice, once on a complaint (long lines!) and once just to check in. Two Dem poll-watchers, three or more Reps, even checking off people as they voted, so stragglers could be called later. Five wards, about 3000 people, 5 turned away for no proof of residence or ID. The first person of color appeared an hour after the polls opened. All day we had an Arab, maybe a dozen Hispanics, and a few dozen blacks. Otherwise lily-white. I was ready for a 55% Romney total. So I was stunned to finally hear the words "Does anybody wish to have the totals read aloud?" I was the only one to boom out "YES" and heard about 2-1 or more, Obama/Baldwin from every ward!
