I just want to take a few minutes to say to all the DU members, THANK YOU! I am new to this site, new to blogging as well but this election has given me reasons to get more politically informed, and I am so impressed with the intelligence and support you guys have shown throughout this election. It is so wonderful to find a place that is so supportive of my political views. So, I just want to say thank you to each and every one of you for making me feel like I belong! Living in Oklahoma I am surrounded by teabaggers so my political views are mocked, OFTEN! You guys are awesome and I will be contributing financially to help DU keep doing the fantastic job that they are already doing.

If you are surrounded by teabaggers you have got to watch the video One Term More. It will have you dancing down the streets.

(2,870 posts)in that it is still red. Most places with colleges--even in red states--tend to be the blue dot in a sea of red. Best example Austin, TX. But not Norman. My neighborhood includes quite a few OU faculty and the yard signs around here are abut 10-1 for Romney. It does seem like you see more Obama signs the closer you get to campus.

(81 posts)Which goes to prove the above post. You guys are great. We do have many young people in Oklahoma who are intelligent enough to inform themselves of the truth and support Obama. The youngsters who are not tend to be very racist. And I'm not just throwing out the race card with that statement. I am a teacher and I was shocked how my students reacted when Obama got elected. From the mouths of babes, following what is most likely what they learned at home, I can't even count the times a student told me they hated Obama simply because he is black. I've heard the n word muttered in my class countless times and each time they get to hear me get on my soapbox. The conversations are almost archaic, from another century. I have to literally explain to these kids that all people are created equal. That just because someone is a different color doesn't make them less of a person. They have been taught that, I hate saying this bc it makes me feel dirty, black people are less of a person than whites. That somehow they are not as good as whites, that they are different. It's hard for me to even put into words the degree of racism they display bc it is so foreign in my mind. I don't feel like I can explain through text the degree of hatred the people in this area have for minorities. But these kids have been taught they are the superior race.
But on the upside, my daughter and her peers started a Young Democrats club in her HS during the 2008 election. I am so very proud of her. She is a huge Obama supporter and is well informed and can put most people in there place if they start spouting off Fox talking points. She makes me smile. A great kid. My son is also a supporter of our President and has a good head on his shoulders. I've changed my husband's viewpoints on many things related to politics. He was a republican basically for religious reasons. I've debated that out of him. Back to my kids. They were raised in church and are still active in that aspect (me, not so much!) My daughter volunteers at a pro-life organization in the town she where she attends college. She is NOT pro-birth, she is pro-life. She supports taking care of children from birth on, not just spouting rhetoric like most pro-life people. She is also pro-choice, I suppose, because while she personally believe abortion is wrong, she realizes that that is her choice and she can't push that belief unto others. She understands that at this point she would not choose abortion, but she also knows that she hasn't been in a position where she's had to make that choice. And if she ever is in such a position, she wants to be able to have the option for a safe abortion because one never knows when a choice like that may be forced upon you. I went a bit overboard there because I just wanted to stress that she is intelligent enough to understand that her belief may see something as wrong for her, but that doesn't mean it's wrong for someone else who is in a bad position where abortion may be necessary. I wish others could understand that. As the saying goes, but for the grace of God.... I also have one of those late in life daughters, had her when I was forty. She is four now and a huge Obama supporter because "that other guy lies, mommy!" Wow, even a four year old can spot a bullshitter!
Hope I didn't go on to much. I just feel like DU is my stress reliever. I can come on this site, and like one poster stated, see good information and have a good laugh. This place rocks! And......I cannot wait to crack open an ice cold Coors Light tomorrow night and celebrate FOUR MORE YEARS! (And hopefully tune in to Fox News for just a few seconds to see Hannity in tears!)

DU is a wealth of information and before long you will be armed enough to take out those who give you a hard time with hard facts in rapid fire succession.
I look forward to your contributions to the many discussions to come!

(66,462 posts)My father was from OK City, and he couldn't get out of there fast enough. He was center-left for most of his life, but I'm sure any hint of progressivism must have made it tough to live there.
He became a Pacific Northwesterner, and made me one, as well.
Stay where you are and turn Oklahoma blue for us, will you?

(81 posts)Just pray I don't get hurt in the process! I live in the far Northeastern corner, about 60 miles north of Tulsa, and the people here are almost violent in their reactions to my political views. So, obviously I am an atheist, Communist, Marxist, Socialist, race baiting, unpatriotic (I could go on and on and on!) non-American born in Kansas, but obviously overseas bc no bleeding heart liberal can be a true American! I'm sure I left out a few of the names they have for me but....you get the drift! I have turned the people in my close circle blue so I do have some support here! I cannot wait to cast my vote for Obama. It may not make a difference in this redder than red state, but it will cancel out one wingnuts vote!

(2,012 posts)I lived in Enid a long time ago; I surely appreciate how hard it is to raise and teach our children the better way. But there are some good liberal people in OK and I'm glad you have family and (I hope)some friends to talk with. I've only been on DU a short time but I have found most of the posters interesting, enjoyable and supportive. Though I am fortunate to live in Boulder, CO has lots of teabaggers. Hang in there and I hope together we can make this a more tolerant and peaceful world.
