Voting day euphoria has been eclipsed by campaign fatigue

from the Toronto Star:

By Tim Harper
National Affairs Columnist

BOSTON—When this ends Tuesday, or Wednesday, or whenever the lawyers snap their briefcases shut, this will be one joyless, soulless lunge across the finish line.

The old adage, that you can only make history once, has been oft-cited in the final hours of the U.S. presidential election, but the climb down from history has rarely been so steep and so fast.

Regardless of who wins this election, it is difficult to see how the other side will allow the victor to claim a mandate.

Similarly, whoever wins seems fated to inherit a split, angry, largely ungovernable country. ..............(more)

I am so glad I voted early, B/C I am BURNT out on politics. Look up Prop 457 in Glendale where my spouse works to see why. http://www.kpho.com/story/19769297/prop-457-takes-aim-at-glendale-sales-tax-increase

It seems harmless and local. But if this is defeated the city council will have no choice but to shutter the library system, and lat off 250 workers at Xmas. They will lay off cops and firefighters and gut Parks and Recreation as well. The mayor was caught in public saying that the library system my spouse works for is a black hole in the budget. SIGH!

They do want to spend 300 million on a deal to keep the local hockey team. They have already spent 50 million dollars to keep the option open on them. I have been working my ass off with a citizens coalition since January to keep the libraries open, and not cut city services in a time of need. I have written 20 letters to the city council. attended numerous workshops and meetings, and helped with the content of our associations Facebook page. Our libraries are in danger of closing for good, and it makes me cry. Why does money ALWAYS seem to trump the public good these days?

I have been extremely busy with letters to the editor as well. The payoff for that was a city councilperson saying I was always trashing them in print. NOT TRUE! My last letter advised doing the council's bidding and keeping the sales tax, even though I HATE the politics behind it.

So yes I am tired, frustrated, and burnt out. Everybody should remember this election isn't just about the big dogs. A lot of us will see change from the little elections too. Thanks for letting me vent. This crap is what happens when a city of 200,000 bets 1.5 billion dollars on sports and loses the bet.
