(2,354 posts)I heard the PEW poll guy say that if Romney were to win it would be because he gets ALL the white vote and ALL the vote of those more educated.
Yet here are white old us, with advanced degrees, who also *gasp* live in the boonies, who have already turned in our ballots for Obama.
I wonder how many others who voted Obama are out here, pretty much keeping our mouths shut amidst the stupid Romney loud mouthed voters who only look to cause you trouble if you vote otherwise. Small towns are like little bitty fishbowls.
While we don't run into a ton of fellow Obama voters willing to admit to it in nearby areas, remember that "all" the white people here that do plan to vote Romney and trash talk Obama amount to very few people overall. Our county sent out maybe around 12,000 ballots, so while many of our neighbors rant a lot about taking their country back, their numbers are all sound and fury, signifying nothing much at all as the saying goes.
They aren't even spit in a bucket, more like spit in the ocean really.
I also don't believe the cat crap about women voters, apparently of any color, going for Romney.

(8,652 posts)there was a time when my Italian fore-bearers weren't considered "white".
We were the minorities that didn't speak English and worked for lower wages.
I try to tell my cousins that. I remember my late Grand Mother who couldn't speak a lick of English, but was a loving, devoted Italian Immigrant. All my cousins (I have, literally, 100) would, at different times in our lives, spend Sundays with her and my Grand Father. There were always about 20 to 30 kids in and out of the house, around the yard and at my Aunts' and Uncles' houses, all in the same suburban Boston neighborhood.
Now, these grown cousins or their kids say stupid things like, "if THEY (the new immigrants) don't want to learn English, they should send them back where they came from." My big mouthed, liberal response is always the same, "Good thing some asshole didn't say that about Nana when we were growing up, you'd probably had knocked him on his ass. " Boy, do they shut up quick.
I found this to be a nice way of calling someone an asshole, without them wanting to punch me.

(10,437 posts)I'm an archetypal MAWG. Fat, fairly well-off, of outwardly orthodox appearance and behavior, gun-owner and a suburbanite to boot. If people had to identify the very core GOP voter type, it would be me. I only miss being a cliche because I'm not religious. People on DU describing Tea Party buffoons and GOP morons (but I repeat myself) might as well have my picture in mind, because they pretty much use my description as a RW caricature.
But you know what? That's NOT my pet peeve!
It bothers me far more when people believe a true generalization is a specific and pesonal insult, take deep offense at it, and try to refute it with examples of the opposite.
It's bogus. No OP I'm not I hope picking on you. This is a good spot to make the point though because few people do get upset about the middle-aged white guy image, and even fewer are listened to if they do.
MAWGS *ARE* for Romney. Hugely. Fuck it, ONLY white guys are for Romney as a demographic. It doesn't mean we ALL are. Nobody rational has ever made that as a serious claim, and it can be immediately slapped down by looking at a picture of the US Congress Democratic Caucus - massively MAWG dominated. When people say "middle aged white guys support Romney" they just mean most of them do; that the group if it alone voted (which of course used to be the case) would elect him resoundingly. This is irrefutable and absolute fact.
Other things fall into the same category. Texas is more evangelical and right wing than the country as a whole. It doesn't mean there aren't plenty of lefty atheists there - they are just outnumbered, so Texas as a whole can be said to suffer from excessive theocratic wingnuttery with perfect truth.
Men do commit more spousal abuse than women. Doesn't mean all men do, or even most men do. Just more than women do (even though that's not even close to zero either - easy to piss off gender-partisans either way with the facts).
Christians do oppose gay rights and choice. Not all Christians obviously - but the first sentence carries that implication only in the minds of those insecurely seeking perennial poutrage. Most Christians do oppose them therefore the group called Christians opposes them.
And so it is with people who look and live like me. They do support Romney - overwhelmingly. Probably to a greater degree than any of the examples above. Just because there are millions of us in that demographic who can't stand the fucker doesn't do squat to change the absolute undeniable fact that our demographic loves him.
What we have to do is realize and accept that when people say Texans are Baptist crazies or men are wifebeaters or Christians are homophobic mysogynists or yes when they say middle aged white guys are for Romney they are talking about the relative and generic attributes of the group, not every single fucking one of that group as individuals.
