A blindfolded boy, believed to be guided by the will of God, selects Bishop Tawadros as the next leader of the Coptic Christian church, in an elaborate ceremony in Cairo.
The 59-year-old bishop, who is an aide to the acting pope, will become Pope Tawadros II, replacing the popular Pope Shenouda III who died earlier this year after 40 years as leader of Egypt's Coptic Christian Church.
He was selected in an elaborate ceremony at Abbasiya cathedral in Cairo on Sunday, when his name was picked from a crystal chalice by a blindfolded altar boy.
Pope Bahomious, who has been in temporary charge since Shenouda's death, proclaimed: "Pope Tawadros II is the 118th [leader of the church] blessed congratulations to you."
Pope Tawadros's task will not be an easy one. Egypt's Christians, who make up one tenth of the country's population of 83 million people, are uncertain about what the future may hold for them since the departure of Hosni Mubarak and the rise to power of Islamist groups.

(41,694 posts)1. Makes about as much sense as any other form of selection.
And more than a lot of them.
