I do not know the history of DU, but without this forum this election season would have been really tough to survive. And thank you for the way this forum is set up with the jury duty thing.

DU has been my refuge for some time now, especially during the long nightmare of the Bush years!

(53,410 posts)on whether to hide comments and/or ban DUers from the site. Suspicious or overtly nasty posts are alerted on (see the bottom of your comment box where it says Alert Abuse) by other DUers. If the post is hidden it will show up as being hidden and you can click on the person now hidden link to see it and what the jury said about it. You can click on the name and see if that person's privileges have been revoked.
It's a great way to alert on trolls.
If you already knew this I apologize. I'm not trying to be snarky.

(594 posts)For giving me Sanity during this election. I thought I was going to lose my mind. Everywhere I turned to for information and news was a crashing wall. CNN the network I looked for unbiased information was starting to look like fox. I just could believe Americans were so stupid.
Now DU is my morning coffee and news. Your posts, comments, info news drive my day.
You should consider creating a news magazine like HUffington Post.

(199 posts)on DU was hilarious. So many incredibly funny people contributed great stuff and kept me laughing late into the night. It was certainly memorable!
DU is the first thing I go to in the morning and the last place at night.
Thanks so much.

(8 posts)Almost as much as I love our president. I didn't discover it until last month, but when I did it was like a dream come true. An entire community to discuss the greatness of our president with.
While DailyKos is nice and all (and was my go-to site before discovering DU) there is not enough praising of Obama to go along with the Repug bashing on there. DU strikes the perfect balance.

(21 posts)Roxanne Rubin, Nevada Republican, Arrested For Allegedly Trying To Vote Twice.
http://www.fox5vegas.com/story/19990620/woman-arrested-for-attemting-to-vote-twice?autoStart=true&topVideoCatNo=default&clipId=7917952#.UJZ0mRntSj8.twitter
Roxanne Rubin, a registered Republican from Henderson, Nev., was arrested Friday on a felony charge of attempting to vote twice in the same election.
FBI agents took Rubin into custody as she arrived for work at the Riviera hotel-casino, according to the Associated Press. Rubin had roused suspicion on Oct. 29, after casting a vote at her precinct in Henderson, and then allegedly attempting to vote at a different polling site in Las Vegas later that day. Election workers at the second location ran her name through a database, which showed that she had already voted. When confronted by officials, Rubin reportedly claimed that their database was incorrect, and that she had not yet voted. She was ultimately prevented from casting the second vote.
A complaint was subsequently filed with Nevada's Elections Integrity Task Force, which carried out the investigation.

(410 posts)The other day someone on FB asked what "predatory capitalism" was ...he was a friend of a friend and was slamming Stephen Stills recent piece in Rolling Stone stating that HE wouldn't be taking any political guidance from a musician such as THAT one ... so I thought alright I'll kick him a couple of Matt Taibbi links if actually doesn't know that predatory capitalism exists ... well, of course, it was a neocon in sheep's clothing who proceeded to rail at me and tell me I wasn't worth the air I breathed and could f*@k off ... he compared me to Alexander Co@kburn (which I took as a compliment of course) and said I didn't know how to find a correct source for the discussion ... he, as a former teacher, would only read certain publications and The Economist was one of them ... well, The Economist recently came out for OBAMA so I shot him that link and explained to him that HE doesn't get to pick my sources ... if he wants to live inside a bubble that is certainly his choice but Matt Taibbi is a well respected journalist ... He then went on to explain that I was obviously filled with uncontrollable anger and again wasn't worth the AIR I was breathing ... So I shot him a private note pondering if he talked to his wife this way, because only a mindless simpleton would put up with his bullying and inquired if he wouldn't like to "BITE ME" ... NEXT, this supposed friend who is a liberal dumped me and the absent minded professor blocked me ... Oh, that's right WOMEN aren't allowed to talk back in the bubble ... certainly not liberal ones ...
All because of a couple of terrifying links from Rolling Stone? ... I could only laugh ... Why would either one of them be afraid of Rolling Stone, Stephen Stills, or Matt Taibbi? ....
Thank you DU for being here ...

Aside from some favorite thinkers who make a living reporting or writing about the political scene (and some of them actually post here too), I think DU has some of the best political minds on the internet. The support is also great, not having to keep all of this to ourselves - there is a place to share ideas and educate ourselves about the best course we should be taking as part of the larger world.
Just about every day this place is a bright light in our often unenlightened culture.
Thank you, DU!!
