Good morning, family! Thus far, Florida Gov. Rick Scott has rejected calls to extend early voting to Sunday, November 4 to accommodate heavy voter turnout throughout the state. Voters have stood in line for several hours to cast their ballot. An elderly woman at the early voting site in Aventura, passed out after several hours of standing in the hot sun. Emergency medical technicians removed her by ambulance for medical treatment. The woman was African-American and presumed to be a President Obama supporter, so her inability to cast a ballot was a victory for the Republican strategy of voter suppression in Florida.

Poll monitor: Seniors passing out at early voting
PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. -- Senior citizens are passing out at local polls, and that's just the beginning.
A non-partisan volunteer, who is monitoring early voting in Palm Beach county, is concerned.
She says she's seeing super-long lines and election staff rushing seniors through early voting.
Jan Hughes is one of 27 volunteers watching early voting locations.
They're all associated with the national group called Election Protection Coalition.
On the Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections website it clearly states voters have the right to ask for and receive assistance in voting.
Jan says that isn't always happening.
She said, "I don't think that's its being clearly conveyed to voters that poll workers are allowed to help."
If you have a problem at the polls you're asked to call 1-866-OUR-VOTE.
Elections Supervisor Susan Bucher did not respond to requests for a comment.

(39,313 posts)Bloomberg backed off but it took lots of pressure and calls.
I don't know who can carry that out in Florida.
Gov Scott needs to be shamed. And then shamed some more!
It's shameful what is going on over there.

(18,672 posts)this is unacceptable. You can't tell me the "Greatest Country on the Face of the Earth" can't provide enough places to vote. Voting should be easier than this. I've lived in WA state for 5 years and hands down, mail in (or drop off, which I prefer) paper ballots are so much better than waiting in long lines to punch buttons on a machine without a paper trail. With paper ballots, seniors could vote in the comfort of their homes and take their time going over all the choices.

(7,290 posts)And in Florida, all ballots are paper ballots.
They don't have to stand in line, and I don't understand why they do - could be an issue of not educating the voting public about their options.

(29,565 posts)The solution is to extend early voting hours.
Which Gov Scott is refusing to do.

(153,169 posts)voters should not have to make these arrangements for them
The solution would be to open more EV places. Since it's not possible (since EV is coming to an end), the least Gov. Scott could do is to extend voting to Sunday. But he refuses to do even that!.

(39,313 posts)ELECTION ALERT: Voter Turned Away From Aventura Polling Site by Police. By Geniusofdespair
* This is a blog I like to read out of Miami, looks like his own family was impacted
A family member was turned away from the early voting site in Aventura. The police told him there was no parking. He saw the police letting other cars in and asked them why some cars were let in and not others. The police said they had city business. He said he told the cops that he had a right to vote. The cops said, I don't know maybe you can park at the Park (around the block). The end result: He didn't vote. There needs to be a shuttle to parking or some arrangements made for people not handicapped but older. The median age in Aventura, was about 54 in 2009.
Please keep us informed of any voting problems. Link to early voting wait times.
In other election news, just got word that:
South side of North Shore Library.
The Greer Wallace campaign (people from her campaign truck) is passing out fake Dem slate cards at South Dade Library with her name highlighted and they have crossed out term limits from yes to NO.
2 Photos taken 11:15 at North Shore Library on Collins in North Beach. The elections Department estimated an 1 hour and 1/2 wait time at 11:15. Notice they are giving out water at this location.
See the two circles (one on left voting place) to show you where the police suggested my relative park. Were arrangements made with the Park? That is a pretty long walk for the oldsters in Aventura as the park is fenced, you can't cut through it.
