Quick story. Been busy removing soaked carpet, insulation ducts, etc from my , my father's, and my neighbors' houses.
A widow's house down the street from me was destroyed. Her dresser washed up at my house containing her husband's WWII medals: purple heart, conspicuous service medal, pow medal and air medal.
I met with her husband's bother and we are trying to get this back to the woman.

(62,325 posts)imagine the feelings of all those who lost their homes and everything in them. I am glad you salvaged the medals for her. I am sure those are precious possessions.
I just heard from my sister last night after several days, they are okay (east end of LI) but had lost the power. A friend in the East Village is okay too but was evacuated after they lost power in her apartment building. So far everyone I was worried about seems to be safe even if without power.
My heart goes out to all those who have lost loved ones and to those who are now homeless.

(18,133 posts)In the next neighborhood over from me, where I used to live, large house boats (barges actually) floated off their moorings and crashed into homes inland.
I just hope when the medals are returned it will provide some comfort.
Thanks again for you concern.

(18,133 posts)But we got the most important cleanup tasks out of the way, showered, and flew to Austin for my niece's christening last night. Sitting in the sun and sipping a maragita right now, trying to unwind.

(154,021 posts)also for the medals, if you cannot find her, DOD might be able to help or the local VFW, I might not like their politics, but in that, they will help

(13,360 posts)glad you are safe... guess flood damage is pretty all encompassing. I've never experienced it, but I imagine water just seeps into everything, hope all you lost was carpeting...
Good luck helping the widow up the street, that has to be weird, seeing someone's dresser and such personal objects just floating by
Hang tough, sending prayers your way.

(18,133 posts)Unfortunately quite a bit more damage than just carpets but I can still live in my house. Candles, no tv, and fires in the fireplace are a nice end to each day of cleanup. My son has been enjoying smores for dessert each night.
