(2,479 posts)Diverting resources to block off streets for runners not would not have been a good idea here right now.
Also, massive generators powering cozy tents for media while hundreds of thousands are without power and many without good shelter just would not have helped emotions much here.

(25,183 posts)Maybe the generators, food, water, etc. that would be expended on a bunch of people who run for fun can be supplied to people in need.

(62,325 posts)of the NYPD to brutalize peaceful protesters and stop and frisk minorities, among some of their other very expensive enterprises. All those robo cop uniforms and other military gear, how much money did they spend on that?
How much did they spend on attacking OWS eg? How much overtime did they pay the NYPD to police Muslim Americans for ten years with zero results other than to deprive them of their rights?
There's no shortage of money in NYC, it's where they choose to spend it.

It should probably be up to the people who are most affected. The Marathon would have drained resources from the rescue efforts especially on Staten Island and the people there made it clear what they felt about it.
dsc
(52,163 posts)since it apparently only began there. I don't see why this event would have taken all that many resources. I understand that marathons normally have watering stations etc but they could have just said, run the race but no watering stations etc.

(62,325 posts)and since many of the hotels on Staten Island are now housing people who lost their homes, it would have created a real problem to remove them in order to honor the reservations people had made there. Not to mention they had to bring a huge generator with them, most likely to bring power to those hotels, which seemed wrong somehow when it could have been used for something more important, such as the saving of lives.
It simply wasn't a good idea considering the disruption right in the middle of the disaster area.
19 people so far have died on Staten Island, more in the City itself. People are in mourning, and they do not know how many more bodies they may find. It's just not a good atmosphere for a party atmosphere right now.
It would have been better to postpone it, not necessarily cancel it. But with the loss of life rising, it's hard to see why one day like this is so important.

(32,028 posts)26.2 miles? How many thousands do you want to die? Posted by someone who must have never ran in their lives.

(52,163 posts)ideal, no but it is hard to do anything ideal in NY now.

(32,028 posts)No, you can't carry your own water. You use alot more than you could carry. It was insane to try and run the marathon this soon after the storm. If you can't do it right then don't do it.

(52,163 posts)There is one compromise measure. Raleigh NC has its marathon on Sunday. I am sure we wouldn't mind having the New York athletes down here.
former9thward
(32,028 posts)But running the NYC marathon has been my best experience. Going though all the different boroughs, across the bridges, finishing in Central Park and the thousands of people cheering you on practically the whole way. I have never had that experience in any other marathon I have run. (I am not a NYC resident. I am from Chicago and have run that marathon about a dozen times. It is very boring unfortunately.)

(58,724 posts)''If we're in a car and we're in traffic for three hours, what are other people who are really affected by this, what are they doing? How are they getting around, how are they moving, et cetera?'' Wade said after the Heat's morning shootaround at Madison Square Garden.
''So it was just like, come on man, we shouldn't be here to play a basketball game. If anything, we should be here to do something to help the city.''
