I thought the interviewer was excellent (and kudos for not hitting them all on the head with microphone) it is so amazing how all those people are so anti-Obama and yet they could not come up with any original thoughts or examples - sure they could repeat the one-liners and lies from Fox and other right wing publications but not one iota of logic and truth.

(33,688 posts)isn't a "religion" at all. There is no godhead, no externality to worship and enlightenment - which always seemed far more worthy of pursuit than "salvation" as it applies in the here and now - is sought within.
It is the only spiritual framework with which I have any famililarity that has ever held any appeal to me whatsoever. When one of the tenets is "if you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him!" it appeals to my anarchist side.

There's nothing you are forced to believe and if you work and get lucky, you'll have insight and inner peace.
In Buddhism, the definition of wisdom is compassion.
Doesn't appeal to you does it Miffers?

Tao is balance. In every act of good there is a germ of evil. In every evil act there is a germ of good.
Misfortune happens, and from it one grows in understanding. Fortune also happens, and from it one grows in understanding.
Even the "religious" aspects of Buddhism would appear alien to most rightwingers. Reincarnation exists in the religious model, but that reincarnation serves to teach. It is not a reward or a punishment but an opportunity.

"As a combat veteran, I know the cost of war," Gabbard, a captain in the Army National Guard, told the crowd in Charlotte, N.C. "These days, it's often women in uniform moms, wives, even grandmothers who deploy and leave their families behind."
Gabbard pulled off a come-from-behind victory last month over Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann in the Democratic primary for Hawaii's 2nd Congressional District. No Republican has held the seat since the district was created in 1971. She is expected to coast to victory in November.
"She has an equanimity of spirit, a calmness, perhaps engendered by her military service," said Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie. "She's a young person who reflects on the world around her and reflects on her place in it."
She also has emerged as an unlikely advocate on social issues, notably same-sex marriage and abortion.
Congressional candidate Tulsi Gabbard's star shines at convention
Democrat Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, 31, is used to making history. Now she is on her way to becoming the first Hindu elected to Congress.
----------------------
As a Hindu, Gabbard follows the principles of karma yoga, which is centered on "dedicating one's life to the service of others," she said.
And these folks, along with the Buddhists, are called Heathen.

The problem is that there is a communitarian ethic there that is alien to the "What do I get out of it in the afterlife?" that underpins Islamic and Xtian fundamentalisms.

Well, if that doesn't happen, 1) What does that say about God being All-powerful?
2) If God is Not All-powerful, then why are you calling Him God?
2) If God IS All-powerful anyway, what does that say about what God thinks about American Politics?
Well, I guess it's just the work of the Devil.
Please re-read question 1, ma'am.
Eventually, the circut will burn out, and other circuts will have to be engaged. It's not until Loop One is destroyed that Enlightenment can happen. I know I shouldn't, but I hope it's painful.

Just a first step.
We are going to free all the mammals.
We are going to enfranchise all of the mammals.

(212 posts)Partisans (lets be honest all humans) can be very emotionally driven. I watch this video and have a profound amount of sadness, and deep compassion for the emotional state some of those folks are in, some are to the point of tears. They know something isn't correct in their lives so they look for meaning and use emotion instead of intellect to look for the reasons they feel incomplete. I see them and I see myself when I fail to step back and assess a situation and let my emotion draw the conclusions. I noticed OP's title and thought being a Buddhist myself the video would be interesting, yet I just found it sad...
