The New York City Marathon is being held as planned Sunday despite the area still reeling from the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
Now, a New York Post story reports generators being used for race preparations have enough juice to power 400 homes in Staten Island and Manhattan that are still without power.
New York City Marathon 2012: Residents affected by Hurricane Sandy are angered about generators being used for the race. (New York Post)
The two mega-generators put out 800 kilowatts, according to the New York Post. Currently, they both are constantly running to power the marathons media tent in Central Park.
Theres also a third generator not being used, but is on standby in case one of the other generators fails.
Also angering hurricane victimsa food services truck was seen dropping off hundreds of cases of water for the marathon runners.

(2,140 posts)And it may have been on the NFL Network...What I saw, said that the Steelers, unable to secure hotel accomodations, and unwilling to try to bump anyone out, will fly in to play Sunday am,and fly out after the game...

(45,490 posts)the NFL requires that the team arrive in the host city at least 24 hours before the game.

(2,921 posts)The schedule is that the Steelers will be ready to go in the morning to Newark.

(4,742 posts)Pro athletes can be real shitheads at times especially when it comes to game day. Sounds like the Stillers players and coaches are thinking about others versus themselves. It is s light disadvantage to travel on game day but that is the right move. Good for them (and this is coming from a Browns fan.)

(4,742 posts)I worked with NFL teams for 10 years. They are basically self-sufficient on game day. Yes there will be some police (hired for off-duty work) but beyond that there's nothing that will be disruptive on Sunday. They are not taking up miles and miles of resources, barricades, police, EMT, etc.
Dawgs
(14,755 posts)And the marathon does not take up "miles and miles of resources". That's a lie.

And I'll tell you that your eating breakfast is causing people elsewhere to starve...it's just as stupid.

(58,179 posts)The Knicks game, too.
And a lot of people are saying they shouldn't play the games.
The Steelers, for their part, are taking the in-the-NFL unprecedented step of traveling to the game on Sunday instead of the day before, so as not to put any additional pressure on people in the region. Plus, I don't think there are any local hotel rooms available. They'll be coming in on Sunday from far away, so as to make no additional impact on the region.

(2,477 posts)At Fri Nov 2, 2012, 01:55 PM an alert was sent on the following post:
Funny how everyone is whining about the NYC Marathon, but no mention of NFL Steelers vs Giants
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021693460
REASON FOR ALERT:
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate. (See Community Standards.)
ALERTER'S COMMENTS:
Diminishes the fact that thousands of people in New York are literally going hungry here, homeless and without either power or a place to take a shower. Very divisive and hurtful.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Fri Nov 2, 2012, 02:01 PM, and the Jury voted 0-6 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Are you fucking kidding me, this was alerted on? Why? Poster is not diminishing anything. What a bullshit alert.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: I don't see anything divisive here...just a comparison of the two major sporting events happening and the fact that the NFL isn't receiving the criticism that the marathon is.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Oh good grief ... The alert button is not mommy.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

(8,401 posts)... An NFL game at MetLife Stadium does not require the diversion of thousands of police officers from the outer boroughs, where they are very much needed at the moment, to Manhattan for the marathon.
