Just got back from the President's rally in Hilliard, Ohio. It was a really great time. When I picked up my tickets at the local field office, they told me they were expecting about 2,000 people there. I got there about an hour after the doors opened, and there were easily WAY more than 2,000 people waiting outside just to get in. It was a relatively small venue (a horse barn kind of building at a small fairgrounds), but it was packed to the gills. Just by estimating, I would put the crowd at closer to 10,000. I was in the middle of the pack, and I was easily 100 feet away from the podium.
Ted Strickland was there (gravelly voice and all--you can tell he's been campaigning non-stop for the President), and he got in a few good zingers to warm up the crowd. Probably the best line of the entire day, when talking about how President Obama has compassion for everyone in the country, he said, "Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan don't even know how to FAKE compassion," and retold the stories of the Paul Ryan photo op at the Youngstown homeless shelter and the fake Rmoney canned food drive. How this guy lost to a scumbag like John K-Suck should be a constant source of embarrassment to all Ohioans. And it serves as yet another example of what happens when you don't vote.
President Obama came out shortly thereafter and electrified the crowd. He spent a good deal of time talking about helping hurricane victims at the beginning of the speech. I was actually surprised that throughout his presentation, he took very few shots at Rmoney, but still gave a great speech. He was also very personable and provided quite a few laugh lines for the crowd. He unveiled what I think must be a new section of his stump speech regarding Rmoney's lies about the Jeep plant in northern Ohio closing (at least I read an article talking about it as if it were completely new). Overall, I had a great time and was glad I decided to go.
As I was leaving, they were giving away free yard signs, so I took two. One I put in my front yard as soon as I got home (I don't expect it to last until Election Day--it will probably be gone by tomorrow morning), and the other I'm keeping for posterity (I have kept signs from every Democratic Presidential campaign since I became politically active). I took some pretty good pictures, but I'm trying to figure out how to post them. Once I get it figured out, I'll add them as Replies to this thread.

(16,173 posts)put very hot sauce on the back of the sign you expect to have stolen, just around the border and 3 inches in.

(3,784 posts)I was in the MIDDLE of the pack (which means there were roughly this many people BEHIND me as well). Now tell me there were only 2,000 people there today.

(814 posts)but got to meet the family in '08 when they were here. The girls have grown up so much since then, so much has happened since then. I met him at our local HQ and he's just a hugger and so real and caring. He truly thanked everyone for working for him, and he had to have been exhausted as he has to be now, but his real character was there, his passion was there. Why anyone would want to be President and put up with the politics involved to get there is beyond me. Maybe he just shuts it out and focuses on the goal, I don't know. There was a big event where the Decemberist's played on the waterfront here in Portland and it was packed beyond belief, thousands couldn't even get in. I'll never forget it. You won't forget this either, it's magical.
In '68, the first election I was old enough to vote in, I worked at the Oregonian, I got to meet Bobby, McCarthy, and Nixon. Was wearing a McCarthy button when I met Bobby, which didn't make him happy, but he still gave me his autograph. Our primary was just a few weeks before CA's, where he died. I was 19, I've been politically active and aware since then. It's about justice to me, always has been. Clearly don't understand how people can be ambiguous about this. I cannot wait for this election to be over and done with. I feel like the 47% Romney slammed are really in existence in another sense, 47% of Americans are just fucking blind stupid.
