and that was offered by President Obama.
Hope all the New Yorkers remember that now that so many are in trouble.
Fuck you Bloomberg. No wonder Cuomo is now more visible.

(11,229 posts)1. Why is this the only mention of this story? I would think the major NY media would be all over this if it were true, and they are not. I live in NYC and all I have heard concerning FEMA and Bloomberg is his non stop praise for FEMA's work.
2. What would be his motive for turning down FEMA help? I can't think of one.
3. There are no citations or links to what is evidently a blog post form an anonymous source that you linked. Is that what people are basing this accusation against Bloomberg on?

Considering the humongus security and media presence Obama has to have with him, I go with Bloomberg not wanting streets roped off for a Presidential visit-- if Obama visits Tottenville, ambulances and fire trucks can't get through. Even Obama's own FEMA people could have problems with the security cordons.
It's a bullshit meme sent out by people who are not friendly to Obama. Probably not to Bloomberg, either.

(22,920 posts)I was also looking for an official statement or news report that he turned down help, not just the DailyKos story.
Still haven't perused everything here, but there is a link to Mayoral Executive Orders which don't seem to be turning down aid:

(7,515 posts)this is a Daily Kos story from 10/27/12. I caught a few words from a statement he made about the fact that New Yorkers pay high taxes and one of the benefits of those taxes is their ability to handle problems....Then he turned away an Obama visit....Now that he knows he is going to need FEMA help h has endorsed Obama. It's rather fun to see the little emperor eat crow.

(43,049 posts)and, please, without the amazing powers of hindsight?
I lived in NYC through Donna, Gloria, and a few others and don't remember any Mayor glorified for his majestic powers solving problems with a wave of the magic Mayoral wand. I do remember cops, firefighters, EMS, utility crews and others doing their jobs, for which they were pretty well trained, although the mayors never got the credit for their work no matter how much he got blamed when something went wrong.
Oh, there was Giuliani, who would have taken credit for anyone swimming out to save a kitten in a hurricane, but he was a special case of scumbag, and Bloomberg, for all the faults he has, comes nowhere close.

(62,325 posts)one year ago where over 70% of New Yorkers disapproved of his handling of the storm. He fired a few people claiming he was not 'kept informed'. Well, it's job to be informed. His street was ploughed though airc.

BTW, just heard he canceled the marathon.

(62,325 posts)I wouldn't want the job either, but he did, three times already. Sorry to not be very enthused about Bloomberg. He's better than Giuliani, but that's not saying much. His treatment of OWS finished me and many others with him. He will always be known as Mr. Wall Street for allowing the NYPD to brutalize peaceful protesters on behalf of Wall Street.

Bloomberg is far from perfect, but he's firmly in Obama's court and taking care of business in the city.

(20,692 posts)He said NYC didn't need the national guard there ahead of time because we already have police and firemen, unlike alot of small towns.
FEMA doesn't put food and workers on the ground until it is safe, anyway, and they know exactly where they're needed.
It's not a cruise: You assess disasters after they happen and then send aid accordingly.
Sometimes statements make things sound alot simpler than they really are.....
The local firemen and police will skewer him themselves if he really screws up. Not to worry.
People protest at his house whenever they feel the need. He knows that.

(16 posts)2nd paragraph below map in this article doesn't mention National Guard -- he's talking about FEMA. Looks like he changed his mind after the storm hit.
Bloomberg: President Obama asked Craig Fugate from FEMA to call me earlier in the day and offer any help. I assured him that we had, we think, everything under control but we appreciate the effort. What FEMA really can do is to help those parts of the country that dont have all of the extensive facilities and agencies and practice that New York City does. But I did want to thank them for their offer. 27 October 2012
