What if "big" is simply an indication that humans have to continually develop more and more complex solutions to impending problems. The size of business and government would simply then be a measurement of the complexity of the social and economical system rather than a direct force that causes beneficial and/or malignant events within it. In such a case, rarely would big business exist without big government, because either just indicate the current complexity would encourage the creation of the other. Ref Josephs Tainter's theories regarding complexity of societies.

I also tend to feel that many levels of complexity to solve certain problems were in fact not necessary, because these problems weren't really problems in the first place, until the last layer of complexity was developed (to deal with the last problem). Perhaps its only by stripping away levels of complexity in our systems that we can eliminate problems caused by the layers themselves. The more and more complex our systems become, like networks or powergrids, the larger the chance of massive failure resulting from acute failure (like severe drought in one region causing famine globally).

At least with big government, there's a far greater chance of accountability when something goes wrong. In a corporate state like Mussolini's Italy or today's "People's Republic" of China? Forget it!

...of government, that is.

I'll take big, good, democratic government over big, totalitarian government that likes to intrude on your private life any day. Big corporations are unfit to govern because their nature is dictatorial, secretive, and hypocritical.
