(60,010 posts)Family lived deep in the Olympic Forest when I was small.
Not only was there no indoor toilet
but the teeny community generator went at 6 pm, and did not fire up again till 9 am.
So wood stove, kerosene lamps at the table, etc.
And a real one room schoolhouse.
This was back in early 50's.

(51,076 posts)our one room school didn't get an indoor bathroom until the mid 50s. After that for our family. I remember going behind the guys putting the high line poles in gathering up the wire they used to blast the holes for the poles. We lived on a rock pile more or less. Some of my family still live over in there. I was 5 years old when we finally got electric power. One light in each room and that was it. If you wanted to add an appliance, a fan or whatever you had to run the cord up to the base of the light where the only plug-in was.

(67,799 posts)We were out for five after the derecho storm in the summer. I'm not sure which is worse . . . . too hot or too cold. It hit 111 here.

(28,860 posts).. but it was August, hot and humid, in Houston. I could take it,
being acclimated to heat.
I don't know what I'd do with temps practically freezing.

(1,486 posts)down trees everywhere and glass falling from downtown skyscrapers.
This was my third hurricane. We lost power for only about 30 hours. Also survived the horrible ice storm of 1997 I think it was. Power was out over Christmas for over a week.

are there any local shelters you can stay at?

(14,337 posts)My daughter who lives in Lindenhurst was without power with that for 6 days. How long this time? It is forecast that it will be going into the 30s at night. No heat or hot water. If you don't have heat in the winter, pipes will freeze and burst. Shut off all the water? How to keep warm?

(14,944 posts)Fellow NYer here, any friends/family you can bunk with? 4 days is just too depressing, most I have done is 3. But it was dead of winter and I was thinking I might die of exposure in my own house. I hope it comes back on really soon. Sisters in NJ got theors back late yesterday.

Is your whole house electric?
stove , electric base board heat?

(13,360 posts)I have lost power for days up here in the high country...luckily every rental I've been in had a fireplace/woodstove so we'd just camp out in the living room and cook on the fire.... Only once did we have a stupid gas fireplace with an electric ignition. I had to bail out and go to my folks house for a few days, which made me very cranky too...
It's amazing to me how losing electricity really does remind us how 'at the mercy of externals' we are...it's like being thrown back into the 1800s
Hang in there, try to gather with friends and neighbors and pool resources? or if you have pets, make sure they cuddle at night!!!

(251 posts)I know it doesn't make you feel better but many of us have been on the same situation. A few years back we had an ice storm that left power out for almost two weeks and temps were in the 20's and 30's. You'll get through it just like we did and come out the other side stronger, wiser, and thankful that it wasn't worse.
Best of luck to you. I hope you have lots of blankets and somebody to snuggle with.

(1,732 posts)and it seemed more like 15 years! Temps were upper 90's near 100 degrees for several days afterwards with zero cloud cover ... to say folks were testy in my neighborhood is an understatement, and we live an hour north of New Orleans.
