I have three friends who are contractors.
My friend Willard only uses a screwdriver. He calls himself a 'born-and-bed screwdriver man'. He drills holes with it, hammers nails with the handle, and even uses it to drive screws.
Another contractor friend, Max, uses only his hammer. It's really good with nails and you can use the claw for slot-head screws. It's handy for demolition work.
Willard thinks that Max is immoral for using a hammer. More than that, Willard sees Max as a threat to the freedom of all screwdriver users to use screwdrivers at all. Willard insists that everything but the screwdriver be removed from the toolbox.
Max thinks that Willard is a dangerous, anti-hammer zealot who should be shunned by the rest of society. Max believes that it should be a crime to even say the word 'screwdriver' and those who do are subversive. Max always says: "better dead than screwed'.
Willard and Max even came to blows over this on several occasions and their wives hate each other.
I have a third friend, Harry, who uses both hammers and screwdrivers, each when appropriate. In fact, Harry is constantly looking for new tools as well as innovative ways to apply existing ones. Harry always says 'A broad palate makes for a fine painting'.
Some people came by the other day, looking for a contractor for their house. They choose Harry. Willard and Max were too busy fighting to even bid the job.

Please substitute the words 'Capitalism' for 'Screwdriver' and 'Socialism' for 'Hammer'.
Then explain to me why people are willing to kill each other a simple choice of tools.

(33,224 posts)The hammer really does a better job of most tasks, yet no contractors in this country actually use them because the manufacturers of screwdrivers have convinced people that screwdriver=american.
Some day americans will rediscover the utility of the hammer. A screw can be driven far quicker with a hammer blow... but it does leave dents in the shiny finishwork.
