Props to the gay folks in Atlanta

It's really a race between us and North Carolina over - shockingly - who can be the most sane Southern state. My kind of race.

There are a lot of racists in all states, but the south does seem to have a disproportionate share.

A lot of people are perfectly aware that racism is more socially acceptable in larger swathes of the South. But I have never read anyone claiming there were no such areas in the North.

Your average northern suburb is chock full of racists. But most try to keep that hidden from all but their closest friends. It is not socially acceptable. Also, their racism can be measured in fear, not hatred.

Oddly, a lot of southerners on DU like to post, "I have never seen anything like that." I suppose it is possible. But they must not get out much. Or are oblivious to their surroundings.

But it was in the South where they codified that racism into civil law. Where white juries acquitted white klansmen patently guilty of lynchings, and then threw them celebratory parties. Where they instituted poll tests they themselves could not pass in order to suppress the African-American vote, etc.

I find it interesting that someone not living in the South tells those who do what they should or shouldn't have seen. And, if we don't "see" what you think we are supposed to see, then the real problem is us because we're 'oblivious.' Or, maybe you think we are just too stupid to notice between dragging our knuckles and scoping out the hottest cousin?

What is your explanation for those who claim never to have observed that phenomenon in the South?

- doesn't exist
- don't get out much
- oblivious

You object to the last two. Do you have other possible explanations?

The amazing thing to me is how racist people can be while believing they aren't racist at all. I'm thinking of one of my (former) friends, who sat outside chatting with me and got on a rant about how black people just trash whatever neighborhood they live in. He said this while smoking and leaving his butts on the ground in a public place, as if the entire world is his personal ashtray, and saw no irony in that. He was shocked and offended when I called him out on his racism. He explained he's not a racist, he just thinks white people behave better. (?!) I have no clue how to handle people who think they are well meaning but demonstrate that kind of ignorance. And once it started leaking out of him, stopping it was like trying to use a cork to stop hurricane sandy from gushing into the subways. After we started arguing about it, he asked if we could just agree not to talk about race. And then he changed the subject to "those mexicans" as if that would be better or somehow different.

Sorry for the rant here, I'm still coming to terms with the moment where we went from friends for several years to my sudden and absolute realization that I cannot be friends with that person. I think I actually sat across from him with my head in my hands rocking back and forth thinking this can't be happening.
