That is something I heard james watt say, out loud. During the accursed reagan era. james watt was the God-forsaken Secretary of the Interior. And that's a statement he actually made. Made me want to SCREAM!!!!! He was so repeatedly horrible that even Nancy Reagan couldn't deal with him anymore. And he was soon replaced. Not soon enough, though.

But they don't think ahead that far or care that much. Thinking past the next high school football game is difficult for them.

The planet is infinite in every direction, and God wants us to do whatever we like to it. The United states is, of course, the veritable kingdom of heaven - or at least the closest you'll find on earth - and so has the special favor of god, a mandate to own the world. As a nation with the literal mandate of heaven, we are of course immune to any harm befalling us that doesn't come from Satan (liberals, muslims, gays, etc).

The nationalism shown by these right-wing crowds is almost a new ideology that has morphed into the idea that 'viewpoints' contrary to a certain position are ostensibly anti-American.

It's the easy way to win a debate. No need to discuss policy, science, data or nuance...just wave the flag, debate ends.

He responds to a call to end climate silence...by continuing climate silence. He looks awkward and unable to address the challenge put before him. He ignores a major elephant that has just entered the room.

It goes against a principle I learned in theatre. If some major disruption happens--if something knocks over or some other onstage event takes place that you weren't anticipating and which is obvious to the audience, you deal with it smoothly and in character. Otherwise the audience devotes a lot of their attention to thinking about the unaddressed disruption rather than what you're trying to get across to them. Romney missed that opportunity.

This clip isn't a game changer but it is a powerful illustrative tool. I think this is a time that a good portion of folks may be willing to acknowledge the reality and implications of climate change.
