I love it when people do right by each other.

(1,136 posts)Food, shelter, etc., yes, of course are number one priorities. But, being able to contact your loved ones during this is also huge. Just being able to feel connected makes a huge difference. Good on this family for sharing.

How wonderful it is to see the effects of a caring president on those who have suffered such a devatating blow. I cannot help but remember the vision of those victims of Katrina in new Orleans being shot at by snipers who were part of the delegation that turned their backs on them in their direst time of need. I also can't help but be sick to my stomach remembering the sight of The Village Idiot gazing off into space out of one of the windows of Air Force One while flying over New Orleans. He didn't even have the human decency to set foot near the disaster. Yesterday, America got an up close view of how Presidents should act and react when disasters strike. Such a contrast.........such a welcome change. I cannot wait until next Tuesday when I can go cast my vote for MY President.

(19 posts)After hurricane Ike we were without power for about 8 days. Had a generator to keep important things working.
Lots of our neighbors have all electric homes, ours is both (gas water heaters) so we had nice hot showers for
neighbors without. Great feeling.

(14,040 posts)and I should have favorited it... it was a group of folks charging their phones in someone's bedroom, next to it was a pic of a sign that read "Charge phones $1 an hr"

(81,267 posts)I just got thrown a - "what do the families of the dead in Benghazi think?" (To which I responded - hmmm - wonder what the families of the dead in Katrina think? Or the families of the American dead from Iraq?" And "oh yeah? Obama lies and lies blah-blah-blah here's the link: LIST OF OBAMA LIES 2012 - UPDATED - OBAMA LAUNDRY LIST OF LIES
www.audacityofhypocrisy.com ." (And I'm asking for help hitting back on this one, too.)

(14,040 posts)is how crazy these Benghazi-gate screwballs are going to be when nothing comes of it. I mean, they've really worked themselves up into a tizzy over this (with the help of Fox, Rush, Hannity, Beck & John McCain). I think when all this shakes out, McCain is going to owe the President a huge apology.

(260 posts)It's kind of sad how none of their charges ever stick to Obama. They search every nook and cranny for a scandal and nothing solid ever shows up.

(5,103 posts)I was wondering, if a car was only partially submerged, wouldn't the accessory still work?
Also, if not, you could strip the wires of the acc chargers and connect them directly to the battery. That should charge a bunch of phones.
Even better if the car starts and you can recharge the battery.

(43,182 posts)I remember after Hurricane Wilma, we had neighbors who had generators sharing them with those who didn't.
The number of examples of diasters bringing out the best in people far outweighs the examples of diasters bringing out the worst, but unfortunately the former doesn't get as much press as the latter.

(11,175 posts)In my neighborhood, the Stop & Shop grocery is in an area without power, but is staying open by running a generator.
On Tuesday, there were people charging cell phones and tablets and so on from outlets in the store. The store was fine with that. One of the cashiers told me, though, that some people, unable to find an unused outlet, had taken to unplugging things that the store needed to keep running. (This somewhat un-restores one's restored faith in human nature.)
On Wednesday, there were signs posted, and taped over all outlets, saying that because of security concerns, charging would not be allowed.
Today, an accommodation seems to have been reached. People are charging their devices for free, with no hassles from management, in the area between the cash registers and the door, where they can't foul up the store's operations. Of course, they're still mooching off the store's power -- and, because it's from a generator, it's probably costing the store a lot more than what Hobokenites who are back on the grid are paying.
As a longtime basher of big business, I take time out to thank the Stop & Shop Supermarket Company for its generosity to my neighbors.
