We got 20 so far with about a half hour to go.
Kind of weird here. Some years we have gotten two. Other years twenty or thirty. Best year was about a hundred.
Oh, did I mention Halloween is my favorite holiday? Always has been.

I bought candy. It's a good thing it is Reese's Pieces because it is the only candy that I like.
It is now 9:30 and not one trick-or-treater. That's good because I have all the Reese's Pieces to myself.

(36,974 posts)The city has replaced our road during the past couple of months and not all the curbs have been put in yet and there are holes and mounds of dirt piled up on the berm.
They just recently put the sidewalks back in.
But they haven't put up the new street lights yet. So, the city sent out a flyer asking our street and the next one over to keep our outside lights off this year and not do Halloween
We normally see 50+ kids, but the number will be zero this year

(903 posts)we live in a fairly secluded subdivision, and the houses are all on acre or more lots, so it's lots of walking for not much pay-off.
pretty much all of them come at the same time- one of the parents is pulling a trailer with an atv, and most of the kids in the neighborhood, and some parents are on the trailer. there really aren't all that many trick-or-treating aged kids around here any more.

(1,922 posts)We happen to live in a small town that might as well have a line drawn, North/South, right down the middle.
As it happens, we live on the 'Right' side of the line and the Hispanic families make this my favorite night of the year, as well.
I will have 13 different versions of "I put a Spell on You" playing over a kick-ass PA mounted on an upper balcony.
We are having eight other people over just to lend a hand - all in outrageous costumes.
It's almost 5pm, so I better get in character (Day of the Dead).

(15,296 posts)And those are just our neighbors from across the street. We've lived on a short private road (shared with only five other homes) for about four years now. The biggest turnout we've ever seen here was about a dozen or so small groups of kids last year. No trick-or-treaters at all the first year here.
There's still time left in the evening for a few more kids to show up. It's just getting to the time when older kids might appear if they're coming at all.

(15,557 posts)and it's after 8 PM so it's over. I wish Halloween was more like it used to be when my kids were small. Now they have all these rules like you have to go out between 6-8 PM, only go to houses with lights on, blah, blah. It was still light out at 6 PM. Takes all the fun out of it. My kids used to go out for a couple of hours and the neighbor men used to take them and trick or treat for beer Ah, those were the good old days.

(5,815 posts)Nice night here in NW FL, cool and dry. Most were grade school or very young kids....3-6 yr olds. Last group was three teens, all boys. They did say thank you.
Lights out in 4 minutes. Usually turn it off at 8 but didn't have the first kid until 7 so I relented and will leave it on until 9. Anyone after that is too old for Trick or Treating. They can rifle through their kid sister or brother's stash.

(12,682 posts)Three under-ten-year-olds who had painted faces and their auntie with a baby in a stroller (we have baby Mmm-Mmms - rice rusk crackers individually wrapped we gave to the baby) and four 14/15 year olds who looked as if they had basically come from school - minimum costume effect.
I only expect perhaps four more - there's another family with three teens up the block and a family with a young daughter across the street.

Good night, trick or treeters...

(13,421 posts)We used to live in a small town and we'd get 50 or 60 kids by our house every year. All ages, parents too--it was a social thing that you'd go out with your younger kids and visit your way around town. As kids got older they'd go out in groups and it was cool--nobody worried a huge amount about it beyond the safety of kids running after dark. We'd make a big party out of it by sitting out in the driveway, decorating the house, and dressing up ourselves. Every year the ritual was to carve the pumpkins before Trick or Treat started. Always had to have one that was a puking punkin--it was EXPECTED and we heard about it the one year we did regular jack o lanterns rather than the puker. Halloween was for the kids and it was an excuse to just have fun.
We now live in a more populated town. Lot's more people, but there's a fear here that is just sad. Kids do the church "Fall Festivals" or they go to parties sponsored by the local malls or individual merchants. Events are always supervised with large numbers of adults there to watch over them. Literally, we saw exactly three kids out and they were on the other side of town in the "Faculty Ghetto" over by the university. I told my husband that I am so very glad we raised our daughter (now 15) in that small town where she got to be a kid and she got to live like we did when we were kids. She got to experience that glorious freedom that was Halloween.
I am really bummed right now. We've lost something, and our kids have lost even more.

They weren't dressed up or anything.
I live in the house that kids won't go into the yard to get their baseballs when they land here. I have all my big spider webs still intact (real spiders, they build huge webs on the eaves of the house down to the windows and doors) and plenty of chocolate left. I'm going to be wired later on this evening at this rate.
