Ted Nugent shows his true colors.

As in lily-white.

"It is so very true that my birth city of Detroit was the cleanest, most neighborly, positive-energy, work-ethic epicenter of planet earth when I was born there in 1948, right on through to the 1960s. Enter the liberal death wish of Mayor Coleman Young and a tsunami of negative, anti-productivity policies by liberal Democrats that put a voodoo curse on our beloved Motor City. When you train and reward people to scam, cheat and refuse to be productive, there is only one direction that society can go: straight down the toilet. It is truly a heartbreaker. Some wonderful people are still to be found back home, but they are outnumbered by the pimps, whores and welfare brats that have made bloodsucking a lifestyle. And now we have a president who is doing everything he can to take the whole country down that same path. Truly amazing."

Notice everything was all hunky-dory in Ted's mythical town until "pimps, whores and welfare brats" moved in.

Is he talking about himself? The guy did, after all, sleep with a 14 year old Hawaiian groupie when he was in his early 20s.

It's when the white-flight already in progress kicked into high gear, as the most severely racist whites fled en masse, plunging property values in the city and plunging tax revenues. It was the moment that the likes of Nugent said "fuck it" and began creating suburban bunkers, because they'd rather pull up stakes than share power as part of a larger community.

I was a 9-year-old Detroiter when this happened, yet it was completely obvious that Young's policies had nothing to do with anything more offensive to the whites who fled than standing up against the blatant racism of the police force. The election pitted Young against John Nichols, who had been in charge of the police, and I was scared to death that Nichols would win. I didn't realize this at the time, but the city was then split roughly 50/50 between whites and African Americans. Young got 92% of the African American vote; Nichols 91% of the white vote!

Any honest discussion of the decline of Detroit from the glory days of Nugent's youth must tackle the question of racism head-on. But as we all know, the Nuge would rather shit his pants than display any kind of real courage, such as facing the painful legacy of racism in Detroit would require.

ought to also consider Detroit's sinking market share in the late sixties. People began to purchase inexpensive Japanese alternatives and Detroit seemed to just ignore what people wanted--as they still do. I remember my dad and my grandfather (both lifelong Republicans) buying Datsun pickups in 1969 or 70. The things were like 1,000 bucks and there was nothing else like them in the American lineup. My father still excuses his foreign purchases by calling them economic necessity while bemoaning the fact that you can't find American products (which he couldn't afford if they existed.) Anyway, anecdote aside, it seems like Americans decided to buy foreign products at the same time Detroit decided not to build what people wanted and needed.

if the auto industry were on the rise the dynamics would certainly have been different. But as the auto industry began struggling what happened, at a rate much faster than the industry's decline, was a swift rush of wealth out from the city that the economics of industrial stagnation alone cannot explain.

I've been meaning, for years, to read Tom Sugrue's book, which focuses on Detroit (I believe it is basically his PhD dissertation). Young's election was certainly an important milestone, but things probably would have played out in a similar fashion no matter who took office. But the reaction to Young, I think, really laid bare the racial dimension.

They're called Union Busters.

All the jobs that paid a middle-class salary were shipped overseas.

Once the jobs left, the tax base left. The only people who stayed in the city were people who had nowhere else to go.

I doubt very much Mr. Nugent was at all aware of the socio-economic environment around him when he was a child. By the end of the 60's Mr. Nugent was living in Palatine Ill. where his family moved during his teenage years. So what he has to say is just more BS.

"Nugent was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Marion Dorothy (née Johnson) and Warren Henry Nugent. Nugent's father was an Army staff sergeant, and he was raised in a very strict household.[3] He moved to Palatine, Illinois, as a teenager, and has two brothers: John and Jeffrey, and a sister, Kathy. Raised Catholic, Nugent has mentioned his ties with the Christian faith many times during interviews, and has stated that he regularly attends church. He attended St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights, IL and William Fremd High School in Palatine, Il."
