Good God, what just happened on my TV?

I'm near Pittsburgh, waiting for the weather to come up on Channel 4, when they air this ad showing dismembered fetuses and claiming that Obama wants to use women as sex toys and kill their babies. It was for some candidate named Terry. Is this kind of thing even allowed on TV?

I'm changing the channel now.

Welcome to another facet of Citizens United. If a television station accepts political advertising (and almost all of them do), they have to air those commercials as the candidate/group wants. They can't edit or censor. They can try to refuse the ad but that's led to a litany of court cases that people like Terry have won...and it was further solidified within the Citizens United ruling.

I have a friend in Pittsburgh who also saw that ad...he's a rushpublican but found that ad offensive. Other than shock value and publicity for Terry there's no political upside and I think hurts the rushpublicans...

contact the station. Email, Phone, text, letter..and tell them what you thought of that ad. Make sure you tell them the exact time and date it aired. Stations respond to that kind of thing, they have to, as its required by the FCC.

He's supposedly running for President and Congress down here in Florida. My station refused to air that garbage. Originally he had Samuel L Jackson in it and he sent a cease and desist letter to the station telling us they will sue if we air that ad. This man is gross and disgusting and the FCC should come after him for airing this garbage!

The local news person warned of and ad in the break to follow which contained content not being suitable for children and explained that they were obligated under federal law to broadcast any ad by a candidate. I got the impression that they would rather have not had to air it at all.

Welcome to my world. Terry and his pals have taken over the state of Kansas. They arrived here in 1991 for the 'summer of mercy' and bombarded Dr. Tiller's clinic with their hate. I'm actually glad to see Terry do something somewhere besides Kansas.

They have a specific complaint line for complaints about the Terry ad but I had to call the main number listed above to get through. I was told that WTAE is not permitted to refuse to run the ad because Terry is a candidate in the stae of West Virginia and WTAE's signal reaches WV.

Call them up and give them a piece of your mind.
Or email.

Tell them it upset your children and they hid under the couch in terror. How dare they frighten your children like that? (True story: my Mom did that when I got scared of a commercial)

the viewing public's complaints. Complain in writing. Time, date, problem you had with the spot, etc. Do not be abusive or threatening.
They have to keep a file and include the complaints when they file for renewal of their broadcast license. It is much better if you supply your contact information.
