the East Coast has been getting more hurricanes (let's deny climate change again, shall we?). We have practice.

fill as many clean 5 gal. buckets as you can for the same purpose. Also for washing dishes, sponge baths, pet drinking water etc.

Most times (hurricanes, snowstorms), I remember. Last time out, I forgot. Not pleasant.

I hope I never need it.

I live in NC and realized after Katrina that the calvary was not going to come quickly if we have a problem so I decided to do a number of things. I had already gone without electricity for 4 days after a hurricane a few years before and had experienced two - three days without a few other times as the result of snow storms.

So first I had 11 pines trees removed from my front yard that were too close to my house. Then I had a generator installed. It is on a trickle battery charger so to start it I just turn a key. I have a second panel box that it runs through to the essential appliances and a zone of lighting/receptacles. Naturally since I have prepared I have not needed it. Thank god.

We use empty cat litter containers, the ones that hold about 2 gallons, for watering stuff on the deck and for flushing toilets if needs be.
You have to empty the water into the toilet bowl with enough force to make the bowl go into flush mode.

large gas cans. We also will use them in our RV when we camp in primitive areas. The generators won't be able to run everything in our house, but we can keep the fridge, freezer, lights and computers on. So sick of being in the dark at 6 p.m. for days on end!

So if the power goes out, it'll hold the cold longer and keep your food from spoiling.
