(14,881 posts)coming in from the west, merging into a superstorm. NOAA currently has the hurricane cone heading up the coast until Monday 2pm, at which time, roughly parallel with Maryland, it gets sucked into the cold front and turns a sharp left.
The most likely track takes the eye across NY/NJ, but it could track as far north as MA or as far south as western PA or something along those lines.
It will be huge, dump a shitload of rain and/or snow with high winds. And it will be big. They have never seen anything like it; the low pressure will make records for as far north as it will be. And they have named it Frankenstorm.

Making fun of what can be a tremendously tragic event is just wrong. You guys up north may have endured a few that ended up being nothing, but so did we. We ran into a haymaker that destroyed our area being that negligent.
I wish the best for the folks along the east coast, and hope they don't listen to people who ignore horrible weather like it isn't hazardous.
Take care all,

(9,893 posts)The 5 o'clock National Weather Service five day forecast puts Sandy just west of Baltimore on Tues. at 2 p.m. Of course, that's not where the thing will be then, but the cone of nasty weather extends well to our south, north and east.
We may get some tropical storm for winds and lots and lots of rain. Right now, I'm expecting wide-ranging power outages as severe as the Derecho two years ago.
Costco in Gaithersburg is reported to be looking like Christmas Eve.
The thing is, the storm is 3-5 days off, and it could end up turning further to the north. If it goes north, say it hits land in NJ or on Long Island, we'll get plenty of rain and wind, but it won't be that bad.
I plan on going out and stocking up on batteries, water (or water bottles), and canned food to last maybe a week. I lost power for a week during the derecho.
It may also get down to the '40s in temp by Wednesday, and if you don't have power, you won't have heat unless you have a wood-burning fireplace or a gasoline or diesel house heater.
If it hits here directly, it could get bad.

Beyond that, I don't have plans to do much more. We're in Maine, but the ocean is several hundred feet and downhill from our house, so I'm not worrying about flooding right here. If we had to go out there might be some roads on the way to and from town that could have some trouble.

(12,233 posts)close to an election will create quite a mess of a situation if there are large power outages and major damage.. People will be in survival mode; not thinking of the election OR even having anything but radio updates.
Make sure you have full tanks of gas in your cars. Make sure you have cash on hand. Make sure you have your cell phone fully charged up. Make sure you know where all your family members are before and what their plans are for the storm so that if you don't hear from them because communication is down, you aren't freaking out.
This thing may just cause a serious issue for the upcoming election if its destined to harm the "blue states" of the North East... Please, early vote if you can.....

help get the backyards ready, gutters cleared, shopping, trim some branches, and get stuff off the basement floors. Expecting 7 inches of rain, flooding, and power outages.
Imagine if we don't get power back by the 6th: halloween cancelled, voting delayed while other parts of the country vote -- need a radio to hear the election. It can't come to that can it?

(666 posts)Well, in the short of it all, 2 of the houses never lost power. Mine being one of them -- ironic, I lost power during Irene but not to Sandy whereas my girlfriend's house did not lose power to Irene but did to Sandy. Fortunately not enough rain to cause any basement flooding. And actually I didn't have to work on the basement items as there was more than enough help. My girlfriend's house just got power back this morning whereas my oldest sister's house is still without it.
appreciate the welcome.

(112 posts)and due date is on Nov 1! Few people told me today that storms and air pressure changes can trigger Labour. Can´t find any scientific data of this. Kind of hope it would happen on Monday so I would not have to go to work. I wouldn´t mind having Sandy as a second middle name, wife don´t like it though! Will see what happens in the next 3-4 days.

krispos42
(49,445 posts)Sandy's going to move up the coast, turn northwest just when it gets to Delaware (LynnSin's going to need a big cowbell to hide under). It's going to slam into the coast, with the eye between Virginia and Rhode Island.
Now I'm in Connecticut, so it's likely that I'll get the right front quarter of the storm... the windiest, wettest part.
THEN...
The storm will start to veer to the right.
It's entirely possible the storm will pivot on its right side (where I am), so I'll be in a non-moving rainstorm for a day or two while the eye swings through central Pennsylvania and New York before finally heading to Maine.

(1,660 posts)I don't think people are taking this seriously because of it. I know I talked to my sister about it to ask if she had gotten preparations and she was like oh yeah I doubt its going to be a big deal they always hype up storms. I was trying to tell her that real meteorologists are freaking out about this, this is not a normal storm. I think also people think oh its a tropical storm or Cat 1 big deal but its more than that, its a tropical storm meeting a large cold front with historically low pressures. It is a big deal.

(25,415 posts)Thankfully I am not on the coast. Then I might freak. But I feel more protected being in Litchfield County. My brother lives in Old Lyme, on the coast. He might leave and go to my parent's house which is more inland.
I guess it depends on where it hits. If it hits Long Island and NYC then that will suck for Connecticut. If it hits in the Baltimore area then it would be less bad for us here. But then I will feel bad for those in MD and DE.
