Killing Spree at the Spa
Van Hollen says changing gun law unnecessary after Brookfield shooting

MADISON - The Wisconsin Attorney General says there is no need to change gun laws because of the killing spree at a spa in Brookfield this past week.

Radcliffe Haughton bought his gun from a private seller.

By law, private sellers are not required to do background checks on the buyer.

Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen says changing the law would be too hard to enforce.

"Who is to draw the line between, 'I sold you a firearm, I loaned you a firearm, I've given you a firearm, you've taken the firearm from me?' " asked Van Hollen.

"Not to mention, you could try to close every presumed loophole you can, and people who want to do these things are going to find a way to do it."

Wisconsin has tight implied voting threat laws. Let's see if Van Hollen can actually do his job.

Now there is a change in the law just about all of us could support.

The shooter was ineligible to own firearms and the private seller had no way to know that.

7. And do that in all 50 states and DC, and check mental health records which are sealed?

The one call check which is used by FFLs can and should be open to private sellers.

That there was *no* way for this seller to know. There was.

I'm not blaming the seller for the shooter's actions, just illustrating that even the most basic of checks might have raised a red flag and was not done.

A single national point of presence would address this problem. Private party sales are not going away any time soon.

Moving the goalposts when you correct a Delicate Flower (a dungeon gun nut) is SOP for them.
