How the darkest impulses of the GOP have seeped into a colleague of mine-

I've worked with and known this colleague for some time, and even though we are miles apart politically he is someone I can go have a beer with and make pleasant talk with.

He floored me with an off-hand comment last week, however. We had had a few beers, and I was telling him about a very bright 63 year old friend of mine who has had difficulty holding down a steady job in the last year or so. I said that my friend is thinking about eking out a living on what he has saved until he turns 64 and starts collecting SS. My colleague, without batting an eye says, "Well, maybe he won't live too much longer." I was too stunned to speak. I mean, not only is this friend I was describing dear to me, but he has certainly paid his dues in the work world, mainly as a trucker but also as a teacher. My colleague could sense my discomfort and said, "It's just the beer talking." I just didn't know what to say, so I let it go.

Wow.

an old expression applies here:

"The drunken tongue speaks the sober person's truth."

It wasn't the beer talking; rather, the beer only allowed him to say what he was really thinking.

say stupid things when drinking. Sober...that's a different story. Thing is that he knew it was wrong.

Don't come off as weak, tell him that you like drinking with him, but you could have broken a glass over his head after his comment. It seems that he sensed how you felt. Some people have never had struggle in their lives, or they drew the wrong lessons from those struggles.
