Two-spirited people is an umberella term used now by several tribes. The actual word is Berdache which loosely means having the spirit of both male and female. It is a nice quote and while it is made up, you can find similar quotes in several books by Native Americans.

They almost always use the excuse that marriage has "always" been between a man and a woman in "this country".

Nope, I answer, that's not factually correct. The Native Americans had gay marriage for centuries before Europeans STOPPED the practice in this country.

There are a ton of scholarly research articles on this if you google it.
