Rolling Stone Interview, President Obama on Romney: "Well That's a Bullshitter, I (kids) Can Tell"

From Politico Playbook: http://www.politico.com/playbook/

FIRST LOOK – Rolling Stone cover, “Obama and the Road Ahead: The Rolling Stone Interview,” by Douglas Brinkley: “We arrived at the Oval Office for our 45-minute interview … on the morning of October 11th. … As we left the Oval Office, executive editor Eric Bates told Obama that he had asked his six-year-old if there was anything she wanted him to say to the president. … [S]he said, ‘Tell him: You can do it.’ Obama grinned. … ‘You know, kids have good instincts,’ Obama offered. ‘They look at the other guy and say, “Well, that’s a bullshitter, I can tell.”

I know a lot of people here will be applauding Obama for his "honesty," but I know many people in their 60s and up for whom using profanity in public is enough, in itself, to mark someone as "crude" and unworthy of public office -- even if they agree with their policies. In short, they would consider it a "character issue" that would disqualify a candidate, period.

For example, I could imagine my late father -- who voted straight Democratic in every election from 1972 until his death in 2004 -- being so offended by this that he wouldn't vote in the presidential contest, or might vote for a progressive third-party candidate instead. And there are many other people I know who would have a similar reaction, and might even switch to Romney because of it.

Bottom line -- this was an "unforced error" that has the potential to alienate a small bloc of voters...but one that may be important in a close-enough race.

....my late father was 89 when he passed in 2009 and he would have laughed all the way to the polls to vote for the President.

You give us "older" voters very little credit.

I have no doubt that there are some people who will react as you have predicted, but it's hardly a large enough number to be called a "bloc".

Problem for them: It calls out Romney for what he is; it's not a clear opportunity to exploit a negative for POTUS.

It'll be a wash, so I doubt anyone who doesn't frequent cyberspace will hear much about it.

I turn 70 in a few weeks. One of the great things about getting old is that you can call bullshit when you see it. There aren't any asses you need to kiss any more. You don't have to "behave."

When my aunt was dying of cancer, she said one thing that consoled her was that she could say "fuck" whenever she wanted.

What, is Fox going to say "bullshitter" on the airwaves

And remember the first axiom of elections, "Voters don't change, but the old ones die."

that my father-in-law who passed away last year was a blue collar union Democrat, despised Reagan and the Bush's. He had a tough childhood growing up in north Philly during the depression, so he had his racist views. He only voted for Obama because his contempt for McCain/Repukes made him not sit that election out. If he was alive to hear President Obama say in blunt, everyday language, the truth, it would make it that much easier to vote for him. But honestly, a rich plutocrat douche that con man Mitt is would've inspired my FIL to vote in any case.

Believe me ... just about any votes Obama loses over something like this probably belonged to someone looking for an excuse not to vote for him anyway.

Your father aside, of course.

Perhaps its the one-issue voters, non-issue voters and voters who still haven't decided by the time they reach the polls who probably need to stay home on 11/6. Just sayin'...
