as more is learned about the true impact of these shale plays.

At some point I think the coal industry could play a part in uncovering some of these pollution issues related to gas. Natural gas continues to push them towards extinction.

In addition to radon and groundwater contamination risks, the methane releases as they drill out plugs to get the wells on line and in other places should eventually get mainstream play.

Many of the risks can be lowered / minimized, they just add cost. This industry is no different than any other today. Just as Walmart shifts cost to the public sector by paying minimum wage, buying product from Chinese sweatshops, big players in this industry are cost shifting pollution risk to the public.
