I'm Getting A Little Nervous And I Need Some Talking Down.....

I had met with a 54 y/o lady on a personal health related matter. In talking with her she said she already early voted here in Chicago. I was in a blue collar neighborhood of Chicago. A neighborhood where a lot of Chicago Policemen and Firemen live as it is on the city border and almost like a suburb. I mentioned that I am looking forward to Obama's second term and she indicated to me that she voted for Obama last time but not this time. I asked why she wouldn't want to vote for him again and her answer was that he didn't do anything in the last 4 years and the economy is still bad.

The Rmoney/Ryan theme of Obama hasn't done anything in the last 4 years seems to be resonating with voters.

I then told her about the Affordable Care Act and how important that is for our future and I told her that her Medicare is in jeopardy if Rmoney wins and I mentioned how important potential SCOTUS appointments will be. She said she would take her chances but she was through with Obama. She said her son lost his business - a store of some kind. I told her that that was a result of the Bush administration and the fact that the Repugs shot down every initiative Obama wanted to do.

Nothing I seemed to say had an impact on her and probably rightly so as she already voted. I couldn't change her vote - but I wanted her to know that it was a bad decision on her part.

I'm now worried as to how many people that voted for Obama last time are falling for this 4yr nothing done theme.

We can't afford to lose too many votes to these people.

Somebody needs to talk me down and tell me that I shouldn't worry about this. That we might lose some votes but we'll also pick up more than enough to win. Right? Tell me that so I can sleep?

very valid. It is going to be very close, Romney has been trending upwards in the polls lately which will further discourage Dem voters to get out and vote. The only way this can be overcome is if Dems turn out +9 over Repugs which the polling is stating. Not good news.

Four years ago at this time our economy was in a free fall and we were hemoraging jobs by the million.

Unemployment has now returned to levels lower than what they were at the bottom of the collapse in early 2009. The stock market has returned to pre-collapse levels.

We're in a much healthier situation than we were from the mess that Bush left.

Was talking (arguing really) with two men on Face Book. That was their argument. Just kept saying that Obama hasn't done anything in the last 4 years. Wouldn't answer my question as to how Romney would fix it. Don't know where they lived. They were friends of a friend. Said blaming Bush was going backward not forward. It was extremely frustrating. Maybe it's a Fox or Limbaugh talking point.

The Princeton Consortium--who was the best prognosticator in 2008, missing the electoral vote count by just one--puts the odds of an Obama victory at 9:1.

Big, big advantage in the electoral college picture, simple as that.

If we successfully GOTV, we win handily. That's what matters now. Get those people who are already expressing a preference for Obama to the voting booth, and we win going away.

Don't underestimate the ground game of the community organizer.

Ponder this for a moment.

The President is raising more money and doing it with small donations. People in swing states are waiting in long lines to see him. The competency you see parlays throughout his campaign staff. The incompetence you see in Romney parlays down as well.

are preaching to the choir. If R/R win, I lose my job guaranteed. So, I am worried to death that the get out the vote is not enough. I have a decent job pay ways, but I cannot even come close to the salary range in the private sector in the current economy. I've been looking around recently and nothing is relevant for the CALNA experience I currently have with DOS. Double fuck as I have kids starting college in '13 and then '14. I am so in a state of worry how this is going to work out.

a troll.

see this: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1251171102

You wouldn't believe it until you talk with one that swallowed hook, line, sinker the line that median income is down, more people in poverty under Obama,... forgetting the 2008 crisis triggering the worst recession in decades.

There are 2 types of people: one type is like Lee Iacocca, or Jack Welch repeating the deception that they know full well false to serve their purpose, and the type that truly believe it, not as a convenient pretext for something else (such as racism). Only when talk with one of type 2 that you know they exist. The good news is, some can be convinced otherwise.

My point was like what you said of this lady. Romney attack worked, which is why he gained support. But some DUers who replied my thread were in denial, and thought I was a troll. They ignored the real gain Romney had and Republicanized themselves by denying evidence, empirical observation, reality.

BTW, Obama will win. Nothing to worry. Don't lose sleep.

to offset a few who are going to "defect." We also have the young voters who weren't old enough to vote in 2008. I believe hispanic support is up and forget any polls you see about the gender gap closing, especially after yesterday. Oh, and don't forget that the President has the african-american vote sewn up.

professionals out there making predictions--- like Nate Silver (538) and the Princeton Consortium. Also remember, it is the Electoral College that matters in the end. If you look at THOSE numbers, Obama looks a lot stronger. Don't get distracted by the Romney/Ryan hype. This is just noise and is meant to dispirit the Democrats and hopefully suppress or discourage the voters from turning out. Do NOT fall for that.

What you heard was anecdotal evidence. Even if you heard more stories like it, it's simply not enough information to form an opinion on how things are going. It's easy to get demoralized by this kind of information but don't let it. Look at the credible information and come back here for more tips. Some of the folks here have been around for years and this is not their first rodeo. I was a lurker for many, many years and often came here to get encouragement and good information. Keep asking for help and information. There are lots of good, like minded people here and they are happy to help you out!

On Edit: Just looked again at how many posts you have and realized you are not a newbie. My advise still stands. Come here and do what you know works to dispel the blues. Good information is the antidote to hype.

.. that voted for McCain last time. We're talking republicans, born again Christians, Independents, and people I'd never dream would not vote for Romney.

Romney is unlikable. That woman you talked to is what we call a "low information voter." She's too ignorant to actually look at facts like:

Consumer Confidence has risen to the highest point in 7 years.
Housing starts are breaking records in many areas
Housing market is coming back with a boom in most States
Consumer Spending is up to pre BUSH recession levels
Corporations have record profits
Auto Industry is alive and is making record profits and employing even MORE people than before
Our foreign oil dependency is WAY down
Small businesses got 29 tax breaks
The middle class got numerous tax breaks
Many states are no longer in the Red, as they were in Bush's recession.

Anyone who tells you otherwise, is either purposely being obtuse or is incredibly ignorant, and/or a fox news watcher and never really voted for the President in the first place (it's a popular meme for the repubs now, pretending they supported him.)

As far as her son's company. Mothers aren't the greatest judge of whether or not her son was actually a good businessperson. In my area, we had many stores/restaurants close or on the brink in 2007/2008... now they have been replaced by businesses/restaurants with lines out the door. He may have been a shitty businessperson.
