Fracking Permit Granted One Mile From PA Nuclear Power Plant

Last edited Wed Oct 24, 2012, 10:13 PM - Edit history (1)

I mean, what could possibly go wrong? This article doesn't mention where the company plans to inject their fracking waste, which is the practice that's now associated with triggering seismic activity. As long as it's legal under laws written back in 1979 doesn't mean common sense has to enter into the decision to do what they want near a nuclear power plant. After all, if they do trigger an earthquake that damages the plant and contaminates the area, it probably won't be the frackers who will pick up the cost of dealing with it. They'll declare bankruptcy and walk away:

Sigh. We are just never going to learn!

This is just plain crazy. I wish we were this enthusiastic about wind and solar being put up everywhere. Oh but those wind turbines are so ugly, and block our view. Why not solar towers that go up instead of across. This fracking shit WILL be our doom.

I hope the aquifer that supplies cooling water for the nuclear reactors does not get contaminated with methane or some other chemical that could damage the nuclear facility.

Yikes...

PA. learned a lesson on nuclear power with that little dust up a few years ago at Three Mile Island, didn't they? And they are close to the top of the gas and oil fracking states. And only a few water wells produce flammable water. Thank goodness this is happening in the "Guns & Bible" loving middle of the state where if something goes wrong and 150 mile radius disappears, no one would really notice. I just wish it was in Rick Sanitarium's back yard.

p.s. The only problem I have with wind towers is that all the red lights blink at the same time. It would be a lot nicer if the blinked in a random pattern.

Beaver Valley Power Station, Shippingport PA

"And seismic activity has been a growing concern for nuclear facilities following the earthquake damage last year to the Fukushima reactor complex in Japan. A 2010 NRC report found that Unit 1 at the Beaver Valley Power Station was ranked the fifth-most vulnerable nuclear reactor in the nation to earthquake damage. FirstEnergy officials said in a past interview that the plant is built to withstand 5.8-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale. The strongest earthquake registered in Pennsylvania was 5.2 on the Richter scale."

I lived 15 miles or so from TMI in 1979 and it was very frightening.

Water-skied downstream from Long Level down to Holtwood in the 80's, and was always vaguely uncomfortable about being in the Susquehanna downstream from TMI.

I was just a young kid - thought TMI was where the clouds were made. They always had these big fluffy white clouds coming out of them. And I thought the 'Met Ed' spray painted over all the picnic tables was just some girl so happy she met a guy named Ed on that island.

My dad had us pack our bags in the car so if we had to split we could leave in a jiffy but we did not leave our homes.

I remember I was in Algebra class when the school announced for us to return to our homerooms. We all waited for our Bus number to be called and each bus was loaded one by one so it would minimize the amount of time we spent outdoors (The Bus could pull right in front of the front doors of the school). We had off all the next week and it was probably one of the sunniest, warmest weeks in spring and we weren't allowed to go outside.

Ironically I had a family member who went to school in Middletown - they had her walk home from school that day (about a mile).
