(on edit): I should clarify. I mean that normally it takes about 7-10 days for opinion polls to register the full reaction to breaking events in a political campaign. After the first debate, Obama retained his helathy lead for just over a week before Mittcreep set in.
As a former opinion poll manager, I've noticed this pattern in past elections as well. Political junkies keep expecting sudden turns of fortune to register with the public in a day or two. But the vast majority of voters are swayed by the repetitions made by media critics, who tend to take a week to form a consensus. Then by a few days after that, the real impact of a "game changing" event can be measured. Next Thursday we'll see how much good Obama did for himself by kicking Romney's ass seven ways to Foggy Bottom. Until that time, we should just donate if we can and volunteer at a call center if we can't.
