Same week last year was when we had that early snowstorm when all the leaves were still on the trees. We were without power, heat, water, phone (& had to drive a ways to get a cell signal), and internet for 9 days. The month before that (Labor Day), we got a hurricane and our power, etc. was out for 3 days.

Time to stock up on nonperishable food, bottled water, lamp oil, batteries, etc....

I'm glad I have it. I figured the weather is only going to get worse.

Last time around, my bf's employer offered us a generator and we had to turn it down because this isn't our house (we're in a duplex) so we can't do anything with the main wiring.

And it ruined Halloween for my kids.
This can't be happening again, can it? I will be in denial.

this year. Last year, we still had more than 50% of the leaves still in the trees. My best estimate is that about 80% have already fallen this year - mostly in the last 2 weeks.

In Morris County NJ, there were HUGE previously healthy trees uprooted, split or having very large branches sheered off. We were lucky we had had 5 large trees that were too close to the house removed during the summer. We still had a very heavily wooded lot and we quickly decided it was too dangerous to gather the fallen limbs or shovel the driveway as the branches were still falling.

This summer, we had a 2 day loss of power when a microburst caused more branches to fall all over the town - likely because they were damaged last fall.

Haiti, parts of DR, Jamaica, Eastern Cuba the Bahmas and Turks and Caicos are going to be flooded out big time.
Wonder what's going on at Gitmo about now because Sandy is strengthening very fast. This is a mammoth rain system and the Bahamas and T & C may get the worst of it since it could well be a Cat 2 by then

and the issue, even if it doesn't actually hit but gets somewhat close, is this storm interacting with the jetstream or a front, which could mean alot of rain.
