In New Ads, Health Department Offers Super-Sized Warnings
The latest ads from New York Citys health department warning against the dangers of sodas and fast food may not be as arresting as its previous public-service admonitions, but they are not too subtle.
In a new set of posters in English and Spanish, the health department depicts the steady increase in sizes of soda cups and sleeves of French fries against backdrops of unhealthy people, including a diabetic man who is missing most of one leg. The ads, which began appearing in the subway system on Monday, warn that obesity and diabetes have become more common as the average size of food servings has risen.
Portions have grown. So has Type 2 diabetes, which can lead to amputations, reads one headline over a series of ever-more voluminous soft-drink cups. In the background sits a man in a wheelchair with a stump where his right shin should be.
The ads herald the citys latest attack on sugary drinks and fast foods laden with fat and salt. The health department tried unsuccessfully to ban New Yorkers from buying sodas and other sugar-sweetened drinks with food stamps.
