"Syria Is Iran's Route To The Sea" - Mitt Romney

I'm sorry, but last I checked Iran HAS a route to the sea, it's called THE ARABIAN SEA. And of course there is that other little small fact: Iran DOESN'T share a border with Syria.

I mean, the man has really no fucking idea of the basic geography of the Middle East. Here's the full quote, in all its awful ignorance:

Well, let's step back and talk about what's happening in Syria and how important it is. First of all, 30,000 people being killed by their government is a humanitarian disaster. Secondly, Syria is an opportunity for us because Syria plays an important role in the Middle East, particularly right now. Syria is Iran's only ally in the Arab world. It's their route to the sea. It's the route for them to arm Hezbollah in Lebanon, which threatens, of course, our ally, Israel. And so seeing Syria remove Assad is a very high priority for us. Number two, seeing a — a replacement government being responsible people is critical for us. And finally, we don't want to have military involvement there. We don't want to get drawn into a military conflict.

http://dyn.politico.com/printstory.cfm?uuid=5CD244F1-FC4F-E954-E0552D4AAAEE55CA

Passing swiftly over the 'first of all ... secondly ... number two ... finally' construction, which makes the guy sound like King Arthur in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, we have a man who doesn't know that Syria and Iran don't share a border, but says Iran doesn't have any other Arab allies (and acknowledges Turkey isn't an ally of Iran, a little later), but thinks Syria can be a 'route' to anywhere from Iran. Then he thinks Iran doesn't have access to the sea. Then he says they allow Iran to arm Hezbollah - thus directly contradicting himself on "Syria is Iran's only ally in the Arab world".

And then he claims "We don't want to get drawn into a military conflict", but the very next statement from him is a proposal for extensive organisation by the USA of a heavily-armed anti-Assad force:

And so the right course for us, is working through our partners and with our own resources, to identify responsible parties within Syria, organize them, bring them together in a — in a form of — if not government, a form of — of — of council that can take the lead in Syria. And then make sure they have the arms necessary to defend themselves. We do need to make sure that they don't have arms that get into the — the wrong hands. Those arms could be used to hurt us down the road. We need to make sure as well that we coordinate this effort with our allies, and particularly with — with Israel.

So he wants to form a puppet opposition in Syria, with Israel helping control them. Oh yeah, that's the way to stabilise the Middle East ...

on the subject of exactly which group / country is classed as being Arab and which is not - the expression seems to be used by the media regardless.

The manner in which we use the expression "sea" here probably contributes to the Europe 's media not mentioning the issue of the OP leaving it solely as a US subject of amusement.

The subject of pipeline routes has interest me since the travesty in Azerbaijan's elections. The mother of one my dance friends was one of the election observers who was turfed out and the US said nowt.
Just gotta keep the oil and gas flowing.

Q: Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can't locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?

During the pageant: "I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, um, some people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as, uh, South Africa and, uh, the Iraq and everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uh, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, should help South Africa and should help Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future."

So uhm ...begs the question ...where did Rmoney get his maps?
