In '72 I was in my teens. In those days, being a Democrat was something that was handed down in families along with a union card. George McGovern was my first exposure to Democratic politics, he was the one from whom I learned what it means to be a Democrat.
Perhaps much of D.U. is too young to remember. If wishes were horses and I had my way, D.U. would have gone black, with just a picture of George on the screen, for maybe an hour.
In this election season, I will end my comment there with a thank you to a very brave man who in war and peace stood firm in the face of evil.

(33,688 posts)I gave three bucks to the McGovern campaign office in my neighborhood. I still have the campaign button I got. I admired him so much for saying things that desparately needed to be said.
A truly great American has left us.

(4,734 posts)with a bunch of older guys (in their 20's) who were radicalized after returning from the war, participating in the movement, etc.. It was much more being part of a family than a "party". those bonds were sealed in blood, not bullshit.

(1,370 posts)He was so interested in everyone and everything and very generous with his time for all of us who campaigned for him in 72. No ego. insightful about the current situation. It was a thrill.
