A limited hangout is where a lesser matter is released to the press in order to distract from a larger, more damaging matter.
Case in point: Bush's DUI. The news of that was released by a FOX reporter on the very same day that Sen. Bob Kerrey called a press conference to demand that George W. explain his absence from the Texas Air National Guard in wartime. The DUI grabbed the headlines and blew the AWOL story out of the news.
That's a limited hangout.

(81,523 posts)I keep saying it. I wish we had more devious thinkers on our side. That's how we can out-think and out-maneuver them, anticipate what they might do, and PREPARE.
ALWAYS remember what Mad-Eye Moody warned Harry Potter: "CONSTANT VIGILANCE!!!!!" We can NEVER afford to doze off. Look what happened when Obama did during the first debate. Not a single one of us can EVER afford to let down our guard. How come? Because the bad guys never do. And I'm sick and tired of seeing them being able to put yet ANOTHER one over on us, and how they keep catching us with our pants down.
We have to start thinking like a member of ALEC. And yes, we have to start thinking like kkkarl rove. Icky as Hell, I know. I know. But we have to if we want to stay one step ahead of them, instead of always playing furious catch-up at the last minute. We have to have multiple ways to head them off at every pass, AT ALL TIMES - before they even get out of bed in the morning.

(2,969 posts)The party needs to stock up on Gryffindors who don't mind throwing an elbow for the greater good. The Right is straight up ruthless Slytherins and need to be treated accordingly.

(22,785 posts)My gut doesn't like this story.
We don't need it at this time. We are already going to win.
Thank you for your cautionary words. I'm with you.
Edit for K&R. Big K&R.

(34,857 posts)The AWOL story was not going to dominate the discussion like the DUI story. Sorry ... I just can't buy that.
The story broke on the 1st (or 2nd) of November and here's how the polls were looking around the time the story broke:
Bush +3
Bush +5
Bush +4
Bush +4
Bush +9
Bush +3
Bush +2
Bush +5
Bush +5
Bush +7
Bush TIE
Bush +6
Bush +3
Bush +4
Bush +3
Bush +7
Bush +4
Bush +2
Bush +4
Bush +2
Bush +3
Bush +9
Bush +5
Bush +5
Bush +4
Bush +3
Bush +9
And the polls after the story broke:
Bush +1
Bush +2
Bush +3
Bush +2
Bush +6
Bush +3
Bush TIE
Bush +2
Bush +5
Bush +5
Gore +2
Bush +2
Bush +2
Bush +2
Bush +2
Gore +1
The race tightened considerably after the DUI story. Had it not broken, I think Bush wins the popular vote and has a stronger electoral college showing. But that gave Gore an opening, and he took it and nearly won the whole thing (okay, did win).

(50,130 posts)1. Rove would not have broken the DUI story were it a stronger negative for Bush than the AWOL.
2. It's all in the framing. How can a commander in chief send soldiers to battle when he deserted his own post of duty during wartime? The evidence was (is) cold and brutal.
