Too many Mitts
Obama has earned another term
First Published 29 minutes ago Updated 1 minute ago
Nowhere has Mitt Romneys pursuit of the presidency been more warmly welcomed or closely followed than here in Utah. The Republican nominees political and religious pedigrees, his adeptly bipartisan governorship of a Democratic state, and his head for business and the bottom line all inspire admiration and hope in our largely Mormon, Republican, business-friendly state.
But it was Romneys singular role in rescuing Utahs organization of the 2002 Olympics from a cesspool of scandal, and his oversight of the most successful Winter Games on record, that make him the Beehive States favorite adopted son. After all, Romney managed to save the state from ignominy, turning the extravaganza into a showcase for the matchless landscapes, volunteerism and efficiency that told the world what is best and most beautiful about Utah and its people.
In short, this is the Mitt Romney we knew, or thought we knew, as one of us.
.......................
This foreboding start, of acknowledging Romney's strengths but saying, "this is the guy we fell in love with back then, who did so much for our state", portends something very damaging to his narrative: Mitt Romney has abandoned his beliefs to win the nation's highest office.
Sadly, it is not the only Romney, as his campaign for the White House has made abundantly clear, first in his servile courtship of the tea party in order to win the nomination, and now as the partys shape-shifting nominee. From his embrace of the partys radical right wing, to subsequent portrayals of himself as a moderate champion of the middle class, Romney has raised the most frequently asked question of the campaign: "Who is this guy, really, and what in the world does he truly believe?"

(9,033 posts)As I posted in another thread, this is truly shocking. I would never thought I would live long enough to see the paper of record in Salt Lake City, home of the Mormon church, endorse the opponent of a Mormon running for president. That is something that is Just Not Done thereabouts. The fact that the opponent in question is also black...the mind boggles.

That's gonna leave a mark.

(31,405 posts)On another site I've been off and on in a running snark fest over the election.
Mostly, snark on the right wing side and my attempt to be reasonable, provide
data, argue issues.
One of the women lives in Salt Lake City. I just had the most fun
posting that her home town rag has turned against her guy!
I tried to provide info that Republicans were turning against Romney--
and they wouldn't hear it.
This endorsement isn't nearly as favorable as the one in the Winston/Salem Journal--
but I'll take it!
