Ann Romney: Mitt's French days like serving in Vietnam because "you’re going outside of yourself"

The candidate’s wife explained that Mormon missions were like military service in that “you’re going outside of yourself, you’re working and you’re helping others. And it changes you. And are we so grateful in this country for those people — men and women — that are volunteering, they’re sacrificing their life for us, and we cannot forget that or we have to acknowledge that always.”

“So, when you’re facing these mothers whose children have not come back, how will you explain to them that your sons haven’t gone?” Goldberg pressed. “Will you talk about the missions they’ve gone on?”

“I would say it’s probably the hardest thing that a president and a first lady probably do is to comfort those that have lost a love one and have gone in harm’s way,” Ann Romney replied, not directly answering the question. “It is an amazing country, we have the most extraordinary fighting men and women, and we have to be so grateful for them. Of course, it’s hard, and I don’t think that any of us can understand the sacrifice [sic] that are being made by families.”

Some folks are born made to wave the flag
Ooh, they're red, white and blue
And when the band plays "Hail to the chief"
Ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no senator's son, son
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no

Yeah!
Some folks are born silver spoon in hand
Lord, don't they help themselves, oh
But when the taxman comes to the door
Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale, yes

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no millionaire's son, no
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no

Some folks inherit star spangled eyes
Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord
And when you ask them, "How much should we give?"
Ooh, they only answer More! More! More! yoh

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no military son, son
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, one

Nice dodge, your ladyship. But I'm not sure it was completely effective. That was a VERY memorable question, and probably one on the minds of most of the viewers of "The View." And perhaps people are starting to notice when you guys dodge the tough questions. Like - has your imperial husband ever answered that question about equal pay for equal work? No. Instead we got a long-winded and deceitful diversion about "binders full of women." He never answered that question - any more than YOU just did, your ladyship.

We'll be sure to tell my uncle who served two tours in Vietnam that the next time we visit him in the Alzheimer's Wing of his nursing home, where he's been for awhile now. In only his mid-sixties. Possibly Agent Orange related. But nothing, absolutely nothing, compared to the horrors rMoney endured lounging around in Paris. I mean, my uncle was getting his ass shot at every day in neck-high grass and watching friends get blown up or shot up right next to him, but I'm sure he'd much rather have been doing that than enduring suffering walking around the streets and sites of Paris all day. And he and his working-class buddies took Willard's trust fund baby Willard's place precisely because they didn't want to suffer what he had to endure.

Below is a table of contributions from military and civilian employees of the military for the 2012 election cycle:

Money talks– military cash goes to Obama

By Jennifer Rizzo
October 17th, 2012

President Barack Obama's campaign has received almost double the amount of military donations that Mitt Romney's campaign has, according to data collected by a research group that tracks money and lobbying in U.S. politics.

It's a clue, perhaps, into who the military is rooting for in this presidential election. Obama has received more than $530,000 in campaign contributions from individual military donors, while Romney has taken in more than $280,000 in donations from individuals involved with the military.

Obama's lead in military donations comes despite hundreds of billions in cuts to the Defense Department and the Republican ticket blaming him for a potential half-trillion dollars more in cuts if Congress can't agree on a deficit deal.

The Center for Responsive Politics compiled the information using data reported to the Federal Election Commission and includes donations greater than $200 from both military and civilian employees of the nation's defense sector.

Like you loosely touched on above, I don't know how any combat veteran could vote for a republican. I haven't been able to find a poll about this, but I would love to see the party affiliation of "combat" vets and those who actually got shot at in the line of duty versus "non-combat" vets or guys who served in the Airforce or Navy or your non combat jobs in the Army.

Only about 15% of todays Army is made up of actual Infantry. Not counting the non-infantry guys who do deal with combat (i.e your tankers, artillerymen, combat engineers, MPs,...) most of the Army and military serves in a combat support role and is never placed in direct combat. It's not even close to being the same thing if you are stationed on a super-FOB and to have mortars impact on the base a few thousand meters from you. Yup, you might have to put down your burger king whopper that you just bought from the PX while you put on your kevlar helmet

When you actually go out on patrol and deal first hand with the results of your weapons fire you gain a completely different outlook on war. It's one thing to fly around in an airplane and drop bombs on a target that is 30,000+ feet below, but it is a completely different thing to actually see the person that you are shooting in your sights, squeeze the trigger, and watch them drop. After the firefight is over you also get to enjoy the wonderful experience of recovering the dead and wounded.

I wonder how many bodies and their parts Romney had to stuff into body bags when he was in France. How many dead or dying people did he come across? The most upsetting incident to me when I was in Iraq was finding a child that had errantly been shot during one of our firefights. I have no idea if he survived, but he was still alive when I found him. I did what I could and I did what I thought was the best at the time, but I have a lot of regrets for what I did. We were able to get him on a helicopter easily within 15 minutes of me finding him. I could and should have done more for the boy's family than I did.

Did mit really experience the same feelings of glory and overwhelming sense of patriotism when he watched adults and children die as a result of his actions? I wonder if mit wakes up having nightmares of his service in France all keyed up and ready to go on patrol and murder anyone who is crazy enough to attack him. I wonder if mit, when he goes out into public, gets the same weird tingle in his right hand when he realizes that he isn't holding the pistol grip of his rifle that I get. I wonder if he walks around walmart with his right hand tucked into his side and twitching his thumb as if he was moving the selector switch from "safe" to "semi" on his rifle.

I wonder how often mit find himself trapped in the memories of his service in France or how often he experiences a PTSD panic attack. Like me and Iraq, I bet he constantly thinks that the hardest part of his life was coming home from France. I bet he secretly wishes that he could leave his wife and kids and go back to France to die. Yup, probably like me, he misses the feelings of combat. He misses wearing his body armor, 4 grenades, 210 rounds of 5.56 ball ammunition, and carrying a rifle. He misses the feeling of danger, the sounds and excitement of combat, and the feeling of murder that I miss.

Then I bet he snaps out of it, finds himself a stammering, shaking, and crying mess and realizes that he has to come to terms with being a shadow of what he once was. I went from being in charge of 40+ Soldiers in combat, being in excellent shape, and being able to do and deal with anything to being a scrawny emotional wreck that I am today. I can hardly do things like go out into public places without turning into a basket case or pay my bills on time (not because I don't have the money, I just can't deal with writing checks or calling people on the phone to pay them). I have problems communicating and relating to my wife and kids and, if it wasn't for my boss and coworkers pitty, I could hardly keep a job.

Yup, I pretty sure that mit experienced the same things that I did (and Vietnam Vets did) when he "served" his country in France. We certainly should be grateful for "men" like mit

I'd like to see the same number of rounds that were fired at my late husband fired at her, and Mittens, and the five chickenhawk sons. I'd like to see them dodging the same number of bullets and mortars and mines, and fighting hand to hand with machetes for a year.

What angers me the most is, that family has done nothing but HATE America. They have only tried to destroy it. Fuck them. They don't deserve any of the wealth they have stolen from the people of this country. And yes I mean stolen.

13 generations of my family have fought for this country back to 1607. That bunch of Romneys are just cheap chickenhawk grifters in my view, and their money means nothing to me. They have built nothing. They have earned nothing. They have sacrificed nothing. And they are nothing. They don't have the moral or ethical character of pond scum. I look very far down on queen ann, she gets nothing but contempt from me. What a self-important nasty pissant!

If the mission is in some of the 3rd world countries torn by civil war.
Some of those missions can be very dangerous in remote villages

Not france during the 60's and 70's for petes sake.

and those who lost their lives in Khe San, Hue, Danang, Mekong Delta...

Fuck you, bitch. Many didn't come home. Some are still patients in the VA hospital psych wards. I know. I am related to one such individual. The war never ended for him. To equate your escargo loving rich frat boy on a ten speed annoying French people by knocking on their doors to scrounge money for your cult to draftees who hunkered down in the jungles where bullets rained down on them, where they tripped landmines, where they were ambushed by kids with bombs, where they killed men, women and children in ways that haunted them for the rest of their lives -- to fucking equate their service with Mitt's "choices" makes me want to rip that woman's hair off her ugly head and shove it down her throat.

Goddamn her.

The Vietnam vets I know found it to be a very real thing where they were, and worked and prayed real hard to make sure they never were "outside of themselves" in that way.

But somehow it came up last summer and he told me I couldn't imagine how bad it was. That is a big emotional confession from my dad, who is mostly stoic.

And, when I went to France, he never warned me that it might be the same as Vietnam. The only thing he warned me about was the possibility of unisex bathrooms, but as I understand it that isn't as hard a thing to deal with as being in Vietnam was.

I served in Iraq in 2004-2005 and I currently have a 2 and 4 year old daughters. I'm scared shitless about them finding out who and what I was when I was in Iraq. I don't ever want my kids to find out that I was in the Army - let alone in a war - and realize that I actually shot and killed people.

For your father to tell you anything about the war had to be extremely tough for him. If you don't mind me asking, did he give you any details or stories or did he just say it was hell and remain kind of vague? How did that make you feel about him? Did it, in any way, change your opinion about him?

I really don't know how I'm going to deal with the topic of war with my own kids.

I didn't know my dad until I was five years old. Why? Because he was a fighter pilot in the USAF, and we were losing a lot of pilots, so he got to fly sortie, after sortie, after sortie - over 250 in all. When he came back in '73, I asked my mom if "that man was going to stay with us." Several of my friends' fathers never came back, my brother-in-law's father never came back.

Feel free to pull up a red hot poker and have a seat.

reveals HER OWN INABILITY TO UNDERSTAND.

Totally unwittingly, of course. Because she ARROGANTLY, without knowing ANYONE there (especially in the audience), ascribes lack of understanding to EVERYBODY LISTENING TO HER. EVERYBODY.

She doesn't CARE if Mrs. Smith in the audience is a Gold Star mother; if Joe Smith in the audience is a returned veteran who saw buddies die; if anyone at home watching is a vet or a vet's survivor.

ANN ROMNEY DOESN'T UNDERSTAND, AND ANN ROMNEY DOESN'T CARE.

Leaving aside the whole separation of church and state thing - if going around knocking on doors is the same as being in a war, does that mean I can take potshots at door-to-door solicitors? Or just the religious ones?

And, does she really think we're all that stupid?

Has anyone in that family done a hard day's work in their entire life and given real sacrifice?
If she said there is no way to compare the sacrifice of someone in the military to someone on a "mission" I would have respected her a little more.
