General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsToday is the last day I can apply for a job listing myself as still employed. I sent 4 applications
1 to a headhunter, 3 to jobs.
I was layed off last Thursday. I have been employed continuously for 33 years ever moving up in terms of position, responsibility, and salary.
Tomorrow morning I will awaken as an unemployed person. Someone who has become a "disposable unit". Along with 20% of Silverchairs employees.
I have to admit, I am angry. I am totally pissed off. I was in management and know that I came in 23rd out of 200 for the amount of unpaid overtime over the past 6 months.
All to be given the "honor" of being discarded, with a "generous" severance package of TWO WEEKS salary.

(49,313 posts)read the job description carefully then show your experience IN GREAT DETAIL for every point they are looking for
how long did you do it? what % of your job included that skill? for how many years? did you teach other people that skill? how many? how often?
they will have a printable list of questions you answer with radio buttons then you have to back up that answer in detail in your resume.
what i do is print out the questions then tweak the resume to fit the job.
then i put in the application.
have a cover letter that hits the big points they are looking for in that posting and attach that. if you're a veteran, get a copy of your DD-214 and have that ready too.
believe me, they are begging for people in certain skill sets, hopefully one is yours! and for some agencies the best "in" is to volunteer. almost any agency in the Dept of Interior needs and uses volunteers AND it gets you out of bed in the morning with somewhere to go, you meet some nice people and give to your community while you're waiting for the next thing.
If you don't want a g'ment job I understand, but the volunteer thing still applies.
Good luck and I'm serious if you need input, PM me
edit to add OOOOPS! sorry thought I was talking to the OP, but it still applies

(34,589 posts)Might make sense to do some part-time volunteer work that can use your skills while you look for your next gig. Looks better on your resume than a gap, and can preserve mental health.

(692 posts)I've been out of work for over a year now and no end in sight, so I know the anger feeling well. I hope that you find a new position very quickly and that your new employers VALUE you!
Sending out GOOD VIBES!
