Washington voters appear poised to enact changes in social policy, legalizing same-sex marriage and possession of marijuana, that will be noticed across the country, according to a new SurveyUSA poll for KING/5 News.
The poll found Referendum 74, which would make Washington the seventh state to enact marriage equality, leading by a 55-40 percent margin with just 6 percent undecided. No state in America has ever voted in favor of same-sex marriage. The issue is also on the ballot in Maryland and Maine.
Initiative 502, the marijuana measure, is ahead 57-33 percent with 10 percent undecided. Its backers including Seattles former top FBI agent, I-502 would make legal and tax the growing of marijuana in Washington and sale of small amounts of cannabis to adults.

(13,184 posts)They're running TV ads featuring former US Attorneys endorsing I-502. The King County sheriff has endorsed it. The Repbulican US senate candidate has endorsed it (though Cantwell has not).
I think this sucker's gonna win, and maybe Colorado, too. Looks tougher for Oregon.

(27,985 posts)but last night (2am), I was in the breakroom and the TV was on and I was entertained by a commercial telling me that I could vote against Ref 74 and not actually be a homophobe. I laughed my ass off and then went to the web to check out Ref 74. I'll go sign up and volunteer.

I love living here and have never pondered moving.....except to Oregon. Would never consider Idaho.

(10,942 posts)It just barely failed at the apex of the teabagger craze. I expect a saner electorate going to the poll this year will approve the measure. Kudos to Washington State, it remains a shining beacon of justice.
