(22,000 posts)I've met one Iranian and that was in college. He was our RA (resident assistant) and was a super nice guy. I grew up in a fairly small town (18,000 at the time, now it's 32,000) and there were not many minorities there. About 70% were racists (maybe more). I only lived in that town for middle and high school, but it did bother me.
I wish I had written the guys name down to see if I could find him on Facebook or something.

(14,524 posts)I have thought this, literally for decades. Warpigs fanning the flames of hate. They infest governments worldwide, including our own.
Next time they want to have a war, let them go do the fighting and pay for it out of their own pockets.

To the Iranian people
To all the fathers, mothers, children, brothers and sisters
For there to be a war between us, first we must be afraid of each other, we must hate.
I'm not afraid of you, I don't hate you.
I don t even know you. No Iranian ever did me no harm. I never even met an Iranian...Just one in Paris in a museum. Nice dude.
I see sometime here, on the TV, an Iranian. He is talking about war.
I'm sure he does not represent all the people of Iran.
If you see someone on your TV talking about bombing you ...be sure he does not represent all of us.
I'm not an official representative of my country. but I know the streets of my town, I talk with my neighbors, my familys, my friends and in the name of all these people ...we love you.
We mean you no harm.
On the contrary, we want to meet, have some coffee and talk about sports.
To all those who feel the same, share this message and help it reach the Iranian people

My name is Ronny, I'm 41 years old. I'm a father, a teacher, a Graphic Designer.
I'm an Israeli citizen and I need your help.
Lately, in the news, we've been hearing about a war coming while we, the people are sitting, watching like it has nothing to do with us.
On March 15th, I posted a poster on Facebook. The message was simple.
Iranians. We love you. We will never bomb your country
Within 24 hours, thousands of people shared the poster on Facebook, and I started receiving messages from Iran.
The next day, we got featured on TV and newspapers, proving that the message was traveling. Fast.
Please help us prevent this war by spreading this message.
We need your help raising money in order to make the message bigger, in order to get it louder. we are working on developing new ways of communication. we are working on breaking the barriers
We want everybody to understand that there will be no war.

If it is not too much to ask, can we reach out to those who would reach out to us? The Big DU could do well sharing wisdoms with new friends like these.

(57,936 posts)The governments incite people to hate each other. If people hate and are afraid of the people of another country then the haters turn to their government to make them feel strong and powerful. It's really sick.

(211 posts)During Bush's term, I talked to people from Canada, Japan, France, and the U.K. I kept having to say, "I am so sorry - I swear, I didn't vote for him. I hate him more than you do! Please, don't hate all of the U.S. A lot of us are good."
If Romney weasels his way in, I'll have to say all that again. I don't want that to happen.

(2,760 posts)I was out of the country traveling. Many Americans I met simply claimed to be Canadean to avoid having to apologize. I felt it was important to acknowledge that I was American, but like you, ChaoticTrilby, I quickly announced I didn't vote for him and let them know we aren't all that crazy.
I'm in Thailand now where the people respect and love our President. I don't want to start apologizing again.

(10,751 posts)It is how I see it these days, not only Iranians and Israelis but all of our so-called leaders vs. the people themselves. We don't want war, we don't want them to gin up fake reasons for war, what we would really really like is for them to get out of the way and let us reach out to one another in our common humanity.
Well here's hoping!

(11,243 posts)They were very interested in Obama and the entire election and would IM me anytime they saw me online to chat about it. I guess it was one way to get around the censors. That is also how I ended up seeing photos and videos of their uprising 48 hours before anything was on the US news. It was surreal seeing such big news happing on my Facebook and Twitter feed and seeing nothing in the regular news.

(4,835 posts)Every day over lunch I watched Donahue. One day they had a bunch of Russians (soviets whatever); I was surprised that all of the suspicious attitudes we had toward them were not accurate.
In the end; they were just like us. They didn't hate us, they didnt hate anyone I suddenly had an interest in going to the Soviet Union as a tourist.
I remember reading in the 'Stars and Stripes' how the 'Pravda' had printed a certain story. It's kind of ironic to me that now we have Fox News; significantly more propaganda than the 'Pravda' could have ever dreamed.
However, social media is the balance. Things don't have to show up on the front page of the newspaper or the evening news. Nobody trusts the news to get it right, they trust their friends who trust their friends. My mother and my nieces and nephews are on Facebook. The word can be gotten out quickly and it has some control over the national dialog.
Waiting for the news to cover a story is like waiting for a package from the pony express (with horses); they don't deliver anymore.

Great video, thanks. A good book on Iran - 'Reading Lolita in Tehran' - gives the people's perspective and the harshness of the men in power, or what they're up against.
