Anyone watching PBS's Call the Midwife? Wonderful, and a clear indicator why Romney hates PBS.

I'm fascinated by it because I'm researching for some writing, but it's a marvelous little miniseries about midwives in East London in the mid 1950s. They take care of the terribly poor women and girls who have no access to birth control and so have babies in all kinds of conditions and circumstances, and bear the consequences. It's beautifully well rounded but the two takeaways are that women need contraception and control over their reproductive lives, and that the National Health Care System saved many, many, many poor women's and babies' lives.

My militance over the attempts to destroy women's access to all the things in life that men have is growing by the minute. Without PBS we will only get what the monied want us to get, and it will be the bread-and-circuses that much of corporate sponsored TV is today. Meanwhile, they will be taking away all they can. We cannot let this happen.

they likely think that the woman who had 25 children should be par for the course. Of course, that was her choice and it was a different era. Great television.

Very respectful. Is it possible we will put up with such profound lack of respect?

The reality of poor women's lives back then is very hard to take,
but the humanity of the Anglican nuns and the nurse midwives
makes it a show worth watching!

BTW, it's semi-autobiographical, based on a book written by
Jennifer Lee Worth who died right before filming began. Her
two daughters really love the show and appreciate how much
it brings their mother back to them.
