From an online etymological site (there was another that said it was a 1924 American English word of
"unknown origin'):
.
malarkey, n. Another humbug, nonsense word from 1924. It may be from the Irish
surname Mullarkey, although why the name would be associated with humbug is not
known. Another option is that it is from the Greek ??????? or malakos soft.
.
MiddleFingerMomMom was English/Irish and I heard that word several times growing up (probably
most often as a response to my "reasons" for some of my teenaged behavior).

Doesn't anyone else think that VP Biden was calling him out with the socially acceptable -- or the
network-TV-acceptable -- word for "shit" .
.
"This is a bunch of stuff!!!"
.
Sometimes when I almost say "shit: in an inappropriate settine or time, I have changed it at the last
minute to, "This is a bunch of shtuff1!"
.
I think this was what VP Biden was implying intentionally -- genius and a planned word and expression
to more firmly make his point. He KNEW going in there that an important point to make was that they
were full of sh... stuff.
.
You know... malarkey.
.
.
And the moderator gently and laughingly called him on it... and his on-the-fly defining it as "malarkey"
was brilliant!!! I think SHE knew that he had just said, "This is a bunch of shit!!!"
