I know at first glace the J&J vaccine doesn't compare well to Moderna or Pfizer, but the devil is in the details.
You can probably find the article this information came from on pubmed to verify. Most (all?) Covid articles are free there.
I'm relaying this information from a DrBeen.com recent video (there is a paywall)
The technology is actually decades old and there are significant advantages:
- Single Shot whose efficacy builds over time
- easy storage (stable for 3 months refrigerated and 2 yrs frozen)
- good against variants
The approval study:
>44K patients >= 18 yrs old, 30% >60 yrs old
- Overall 66% efficacy but this varied by region (72% in US, 66% in Latin America, 57% efficacy in South Africa)
- Lower efficacy in South Africa thought to be due to B.1.351 variant (57% still good, but J&J can tweak this vaccine to make it better)
28 Days after administration - 100% protection from hospitalization or death
49 Days after administration - NO CASES (again, efficacy builds over time)
Side Effects:
Fever 9%
Grade 3 fever (> 104)- 0.2%
No serious side effects
The important thing is to GET VACCINATED!! The sooner you can the better...
On a side note...tRump got vaccinated....LMFAO at first, then cried inside. Fucking bastard costing lives.

(8,092 posts)I just scheduled my appointment at the CVS in my neighborhood for tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. It's Johnson & Johnson and I'm fine with that.
I agree that the devil is in the details, and I'm a devil in the details kind of human

(5,546 posts)But I will take whatever I can get.
Everything I have seen says getting both would be safe. The easy answer would be for the Government to make a commitment to allow anyone who got J&J to later get a 2 shot regimen if they wanted the higher assurance when they become more readily available.
I figure that would encourage people to make the leap even if they were hesitant because of the "lesser" protection. Then, I also figure that the vast majority of the people won't bother to follow up with the second set of shots.

(13,640 posts)it will be clear COVID is being wiped out, and there won't be much concern if it's the J&J vaccine. I would hope I could get one of the more effective vaccines later if there was any risk still.

(5,546 posts)We could get enough people vaccinated to really drive it to near-zero.
In reality, we will likely have plenty of hold outs that will guarantee that the virus will still circulate for the foreseeable future. Remains to be seen whether that levels off at 10s, 100s or 1000s cases per day. I think that variable would drive the question you are asking. We shall see.
One of the other downsides to this approach is we have to be wary of bigfooting the rest of the world. What I mean is that it would be pretty evil of us to be double dosing while the third world still didn't have access to the first dose. To be even marginally moral, we should be waiting until there is an abundance of vaccine available worldwide and not only here.
Mostly I would hope that people would never need to collect on the second dose because things looked so good.

(44,979 posts)I guess if results come in that two doses are better, it's possible it will also be offered in two doses.

(14,649 posts)I have registered already, though. I don't care which one I get, although I'd prefer J&J mostly because it's just 1 shot. The side-effects from the 2nd Moderna shot have me a bit scared. Around here, it seems like only medical professionals are getting Pfizer. Still, I'll get what they give me.

(41 posts)I endorse everything you said. I also strongly recommend you listen to The Daily's podcast from yesterday: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/04/podcasts/the-daily/coronavirus-vaccines-variants.html
The vaccine reporter whom they interviewed made a very good point about comparing the vaccines that I hadn't thought of. Although the RCT trials reported higher efficacy rates for Pfizer and Moderna vs. J&J, you can't compare across trials because they were not tested against one another. An important consideration is that the J&J RCT was fielded several months later than Pfizer and Moderna, during a time when the virus was more widespread. The prevalence of a disease in the community will affect the efficacy of the vaccine because it affects the probability that an individual in the trial is exposed to the disease. Therefore, it's quite possible that if the Pfizer and Moderna RCTs were started at the same time as J&J, that their efficacy results would have been attenuated. Also, J&J is 100% effective against hospitalization and death and was also tested against variants, since variants were in the community by the time the J&J RCT was fielded.

(58,758 posts)but this is sound advice for everybody. The easier handling requirements makes this version ideally suited to rural areas and inner cities where the only access might be the local pharmacy or a van driving around distributing it.
Really opens things up.

(19,240 posts)That a vaccine was developed before it was even killing people in the US and we have it distributed to tens of millions of people a mere year later is incredible.
The J&J vaccine is actually the one I'd most like to get, but I will take any of them.

(25,923 posts)that the Johnson&Johnson one is easily as effective as the other two. I'm hoping that's the one I wind up getting.
