The GOP plans a fire sale if they gain full power. There is a lot of background noise that indicates that the GOP wants to turn the National Park system back over to the states and dismantle the Forest Service. Under devolution they plan to let the states handle national parks in their boundaries as they wish.
Such a policy includes allowing mining and drilling within the parks themselves. The idea is that corporations would voluntarily agree to safeguard the environment. This policy is part of Romney's energy independence strategy. Opening up all parts of the country for drilling, mining and logging includes the state park systems as well.
The extraction royalties would be given to the states for their budgets. It would be up to the individual states to fund the parks under multiple use provisions.
The catch is foreign corporations would be allowed to bid for the work under international trade agreements and the resources would be put on the world market. So the resources themselves would not necessarily remain here. That means pennies on the dollar.
If you listen to the GOP rhetoric carefully they view the national parks as individual state resources and not national resource. They believe that because the Constitution does NOT mention national parks that the National Park System is unconstitutional anyway.
The deeper you look into GOP secret plans that leak out the worse they get.

(18,637 posts)Because he will probably get the chance to replace 2 liberal SCOTUS judges with conservative ones.
That will make 7 conservative and 2 liberal judges and will begin the long process of transforming America into the GOPs model country of Somalia. And once it changes there will be no going back.
It's a pretty damned important election and scary if The GOP manages to steal it.

(10,602 posts)There really is no link to this post. It comes from what happened to the National Employment Service since Reagan. It no longer exists as an agency. The GOP slowly turned it over to the counties. It was dismantled as a national entity.
If you listen to the rhetoric of the GOP there are clues to what their policy is. Romney has said here and there and it has not gotten much media is that he favors what the GOP want. And what they want is to turn national parks back over to the states. They want to mine, log and drill for natural resources in the parks. They view them as money makers. They are the lords of privatization. Under Reagan they call it "devolution".
Where their policy is most obvious is their rhetoric about block granting programs like Medicaid and unemployment insurance. The Romney plan is to de federalize many domestic programs. He wants to combine agencies and abolish agencies that have domestic components. They call it the 50 state solution. That means agencies like the EPA and Labor And HHS would go.
They do not talk about these initiatives openly to the public. It is all part of the "too much regulation" costing jobs meme they play on the campaign trail. When you talk about running the government like a business that means massive contracting of federal services to corporations and firing hundreds of thousands of government employees.
They cannot run on what they want to do honestly.
